Is a watch a status symbol? I've always thought a man should own a nice watch. I currently wear a seiko but if I could afford it I'd have no problem springing $5k on a watch. Like a Seamaster or something

What's a status symbol to you, Yuki? Is it based solely on how much you pay for something? Is it anything up-market? I'm with Manglow on this one; if you're wearing a 3,500$ hand-tailored suit you don't have to make comments about it.

This is mostly true.

There is no getting away from establishing a perceived status through the clothes we wear and the car we drive.

My favorite example of this are the kids at Brown University who would drive older bmws and have very expensive designer hippy clothes.

Nothing like spending a lot to make it look like you don't have a lot.

Anything bought primarily to impress others. Which is why most people won't admit what they are buying are status symbols.

Luxury cars are a classic example. People who own luxury cars will fight against admitting it until the end of their days, but the reason people buy luxury cars is to project an image, not because of the car itself.

Fancy watches are another example.

Or designer handbags.

I'm sure there's someone somewhere who buys a BMW and would buy it even if it said "honda" instead but those people are one in a thousand. Although if you asked BMW owners I'm sure 900 out of the 1000 would insist impressing others has nothing to do with why they bought it and it was just the "superior ride."

A BMW is a nice car and is actually not a good status symbol as status symbols go because the real benefit is performance which many people can't or won't take advantage of and it has a high cost of ownership. A Mercedes is a nice car that any owner could appreciate and it doesn't have the same cost issue of BMW.

A very small % of BMW owners would buy BMWs if BMWs looked like hondas and were sold as hondas and the only difference was under the hood.

P.S. The cost of a status symbol is a large part of its efficacy. More expensive status symbols are more effective because they are more expensive. When it comes down to it a status symbol is really nothing but an advertisement to the world that you have enough money you can spend money on things beside necessities.

That is why Mercedes > BMW because in terms of status the only thing people care about is the initial cost.

Unless we are talking horses or something.

I think it's funny how for some people, eschewing status symbols is their own status symbol, and how they will almost never admit it.
