protip; you might be a dumbass

look around you. raising prices is what corporations do
its how the rich get richer.
squeezing profits from any turnip they come across, cutting wages, investing in slave labor/sweatshops, hiring illegal workers, etc...

are you surprised to see price fixing among their crimes?
is that worse than hiring illegal workers for substandard pay in dangerous conditions?

I don't how that quote demonstrates that apple was involved in price fixing or collusion. It was a comparison of two models, one where amazon was determining the price and one where apple was simply demanding a cut and the book publisher set the price.

Price collusion is a big deal because it basically turns a small number of large companies into a pseudo monopoly with regard to their capacity to set prices.

Big corporations have been doing behind the scenes agreements on price ranges on consumer products since the creation of light bulp.

Ironically, Amazon was accused of doing almost exactly the same thing, when eBooks first came to the fore. Amazon artificially set the price of every eBook at $9.99 and tried to force the publishers to comply. The publishers wanted the right to set the market price.

So whom do you support, Fist? The company trying to dictate the price of a product to the producer (Amazon) or the company trying to collude in price fixing (Apple)?

The real problem is that both of them have way, way too much market share and can actually engage in such practices meaningfully. Amazon has something like 20% of the book seller market - that a HUGE portion for one company. I'm sure we all know what kinds of market share Apple has.

I read that article earlier. I'm not a fan of price fixing at all and yet I can't help but wonder why Fisted is angry about the free market and private enterprise at work. The publishers, who, you know, publish the books or e-books, wanted a larger part of the profits made from sales to the retailer (the retailer in question was trying to corner the market on their own product by selling e-books for peanuts, thus effecting the publisher bottom line as well), so the publisher moved to a different format. For selling their product. The retailer doesn't have to sell that product, right?

Why so mad, Fisted?

Because that is not free market. Only a liberal with no idea what a free market is would think otherwise.

Yes, I distain liberals. They never give me a reason to do otherwise. Look at this thread. On a subject we should all be in total agreement on they turned into a partisan attack. Useless trash the lot of them.

There are three kind of liberals;
Stupid, ignorant or evil
The result is always evil but the intent is not always evil. Not that it makes much difference in the long run.
