Remember the mad cow scare? We started importing a lot of bad meat and due to Bush's deregulations the beef industry started cutting corners in how they fed and tested animals or chose animals for slaughter. Bush started deregulating and all kinds of concerns arose during 2004 or so.

What does that have to do with BPI or using beef trim in ground beef. Like I said...not understanding something usally makes people angry. I'm still waiting for an answer to my question though.

hamburger is ground giving it a very large and exposed surface area than steaks and roasts

http://www.ehow.com/facts_6780999_food-poisoning_-beef.html

Ground Beef
The primary source of beef-related food-borne illness, ground beef poses a greater risk for contamination than other beef products. The meat grinding process results in a larger surface area, leaving a greater portion of meat exposed to air. This exposure exponentially increases the surface available for potential contamination.

Additionally, unless labeled as ground chuck, ground beef typically consists of an amalgamation of usable trim from other cuts of beef. Although commonly practiced and not inherently dangerous, this method increases the number of animals contributing to one product, which could potentially increase the presence of contaminants.

I'm not worried about e-coli; my concern is simply aroudn what I eat. If I buy a product that says 'ground beef' then I assume it's meat that was placed into a grinder and voila turned into ground beef. I do not want meat that was rinshed with a chemical wash then treated with all sorts of other stuff and still labeled as ground beef.

edit: I only worry about e-coli or worms when I eat steak tartar, but in those instances the meat is ground by a reputable butcher from a fresh cow (I still worry but again, I have to trust that th eprudct is what I thtought it was).

Kinda makes me sad the racist guy is the only one that sees this clearly.

Uh the outrage is around the lack of labeling. You can't be this dense.

The whole thing is a funny case of first world problems to me. It's like when some chick wants to save a baby seal while eating a steak. Humans evolved by killing stuff and eating it. We'd have fought over the anus and intestines probably, then soaked the gross unmentionables and drank the broth.

Silly IMO. I LIKE pink slime. at least I know the bacterias is dead.

Uh no. Label it in such a way that people know it isn't just ground up beef, it's ground beef thats been adulterated with a chemically seperated and processed meat additive.

If you're going to adulterate your ground beef with that stuff you should have to admit it.

If pink slime is really such a boon to society people should still buy it because it'll make the meat cheaper.
