I would recommend leveling up the hunter you want on the side for farming. Archers aren't very item dependent at all and also come with self buffs that make farming MUCH easier. With a potion that regenerates your endurance, you can pull forever with an archer and kill at a good speed. As fun as runies can be, they aren't a pve farming toon. Farm groups won't invite them unless they are desperate since other classes aoe much harder, and unbuffed just about all casters are unimpressive.
I don't think anyone really mentioned it yet, but this game is balanced around your character being buffed. I don't know what game you're coming from, but I can tell you DAoC has a significantly higher dependence on buffs than probably any game you've ever played. In pve it isn't as crucial since it isn't a competitive environment, but an archer with self buffs will outfarm a caster with no buffs any day of the week. Your other option is to level up a spiritmaster or warlock for pbaoe groups and get buffs from the group.
I'd recommend that you keep leveling the runie as well, though. They are an excellent rvr class which will help you get groups which is always a challenge when people don't know you.
Edit: I wanted to add that, if you're coming from a game like WoW or any other modern MMORPG, you are probably looking for quests and trying to figure out why DAoC has so few and why the rewards are so pathetic. DAoC leveling and farming is based on grinding rather than questing. The ideal situation is to find a camp with yellow-oj mobs that you can kill easily and farm them for a few levels then move on to the next camp. You won't get much, if any, gear from leveling, so there are a few options. First, level in aurulite dungeons so you can buy your gear as you go. Second, level in classic world dungeons. I've not tried it but most of them were reitemized with pretty good drops afaik. Third, check housing for cheap items. A lot of items are put on housing for 10-20 gold just for salvage value since they aren't viable end game, but will work perfectly fine for leveling.
A tip for leveling that I like but may or may not work for you is to go to the frontiers. You do take a risk of getting killed by leveling in NF, but when in NF, you can either ask other players for buffs (I usually had very good luck asking in /reg for buffs for leveling), or use the NPC buffer. The benefits are that NF gives the best xp and having a buff source will make the leveling significantly faster. The downside is the possibility of getting ganked. However, at levels 20-35ish, you can find decent camps behind your realm's relic walls which offer almost complete safety.
