"like every other MMO on the market"

is WoW and only WoW ... it is "the market"

notice how all other MMO's struggle to hold onto 25k-100k subs... while WoW has 12 MILLION!

and its definately not WoW's lame game mechanics that keeps the users playing it.. becuse there are 34123 WoW clones out there with the same mechanics.. that are absolute failures... WoW popularity is in its Content... not mechanics... the Content, the story, the world, thats what draws people to WoW... not the fact that they have spell pushbacks instead of hard interupts...

And then there's the other very successful PvP MMORPG, that is steadily growing and not "struggling to hold on to 25K subscribers": EVE.

EVE often has 25K players on at one time. Given the thumb-rule that there's 10 times as many subscribers as you see playing at any one time, they're doing pretty well. It doesn't do things like "every other MMORPG" either. (which really means: Not like EverQuest, the granddaddy of all fantasy MMORPGs. WOW and DAOC both copied a lot from EQ1.)

Edit: because I can't type straight some days...

eve has an estimated 350 thousand subscribers..

and EvE doesnt often have 25k players... it averages 35k all day, with 50k+ peak at prime time..

i play EvE, love EvE, but still... the rest of the MMO market is pitiful compared to WoW's numbers... 12million vs 0.35million.... HUGE difrence..

but eve is an exception as its drasticaly difrent then any other MMO, even other scifi/space MMOs (star trek online, star wars) have more incommon with fantasy MMO's then they have incommon with EvE

most other MMO's dont even release user numbers anymore.... back in the day it was a giant pissing contest between MMO's because the numbers were so close.. and the few that broke 100k were gods (eq, daoc, final fantasy online wich was the largest by far with over 700k unless your counting the asian market, then lineage and lineage II were king of the hill sense they each had over 1million) but still those days are done every MMO on the market lost huge portions of its playerbase within months of WoW release and they never recovered, and any MMO to launch sense then has had huge upswing at launch followed by a drastic loss within the first 3 months

i'd be surprised if theres any MMO outside of EvE that has 250k subs... and i'd only grudgenly accept a few over 100k, if people provided proof... (and F2P MMO's dont count, as they have no way to realy track active/inactive)

Farmville has more users then most MMO's these days....

and this point is worthy of its own seperate response..

PVP MMORPG?

my complaint is with the PVP...

people dont consider WoW a PVP MMO, even though it has PVP, both open world and segregated into specific zones...
people dont consider LOTRO a PVP MMO, even though it has PVP...

yes PVP is present in EvE, but it is not a PVP MMO..

at its very foundation, its an economic simulator...

all the ships, and most of the items are produced by players, EvE's market and trade is completely player driven, its so robust and huge, that its actualy used in universities as a global market model, because CCP logs every transaction, that database can be examined and researched by students of economics.. unlike real world transactions that dont come with log files.

without the PVE providing resources, there is no way to build ships... without the industrialists there are no ships being build, so its impossible to pvp without PVE

sure some people PVP in eve just for the hell of it.. to roam and kill.. but the majority of PVP in eve is over territory, territory that the only reason to hold it.. is resources for manufacturing, the PVP only re-enforces the PVE aspecs of EvE,

in camelot you can create a character and in weeks, all by yourself be geared and ready to PVP,

in EvE you try and do that... and its next to impossible... because you have to get items from other players in order to PVP, not like camelot were npcs/monsters will give/sell/drop the items for you.. in EvE you are completely reliant on the PVE inorder to PVP

so its got PVP... but its not a PVP MMO....

1) Fix the myrid bugs ( or the very worst 5).

2) Implement the Crysis engine for the game to replace the current one. Proof of concept here http://mharjula.blogspot.com/
Allow the player to MAJORLY tone down the effects for people whose PC can barely handle the Catacombs engine (Like mine). Start with very low flash and allow the player to enable certain features to get to the top playable level their rig can handle.

3) Advertise!

I bet those three things, though VERY costly, would put DAoC up in the top 8 of MMOs, and the top 3 of PvP MMOs.

WoW caused this:

"Because most of the MMO industry has been infested with a false belief that catering to the WoW themepark demographic while rushing out half polished messes of a game is the way to go. Until this mentality changes we will continue to see the garbage that is clogging the MMO market and that is why we have seen trash game out of trash game come out this year.

The MMO industry is in shambles. Its pathetic, really. There is such a lack of innovation and creativity it is mindblogging."

Also wow is a "people bring people" MMO it's a snowball effect.

WoW is like a typical Ford and DAoC is like a rare muscle car sure more people drive fords than own rare muscle car however it doesn't make Ford better.

Here are some things I think should be patched into the game. I feel by doing so it will help bring a whole new generation into the game. I hope someone from Mythic/EA reads this.

1. Have the characters able to jump like in every other MMO on the market.

2. Upgrade the User Interface to the same capabilities as the one i...n Warhammer Online. Being able to mouseover for character and object info makes things a whole lot easier. Plus being able to right click on a charater or there name and have a menu of options makes things easier also.

3. The fighitng mechanics are horible. Its like playing Virtual Fighter 1 when you could be playing Mortal Kombat. You're able to spam casting, but if you hit a melee twice to fast it cancels? FAIL.
4. As far as the casting goes. Lets get rid of "Interupts" and replace it with pushbacks. Like in every other MMO.

5. The Minatuars was the worst idea. Maybee in one realm, but in all 3? This isn't WoW. Along with that. the Mauler should have been given to the Midgaurd to even the classes insted of all 3 realm...s. Once again, is this WoW?

6. Commercials? In the past decade, I've never seen a commercial on any game you put out. Media on TV would help greatly get the numbers back up.

7. Finally and the least important, but I must say anyway. Template making could be a whole lot easier if you catch my drift. It can be a pain and take months to gear your toon corectly.

Buffbots kill any hope of DAoC becoming more popular than all other "issues" combined. It's pointless to ignore that.

No one will ever take DAoC seriously as long as there are buffbots. Not nipping that in the bud when it first started becoming popular was the worst decision they ever made and it is one that they simply can't back out of now because the short-term loss of subs is too great to take the risk.

1. Advertise the GD Game.

2. Spend some of the f'ing players' hard earned money that they fork over to you and ADVERTISE THE GD GAME!

3. ADVERTISE THE BEST PVP GAME EVEN THOUGH IT IS 10 YEARS OLD.

4. See 1 - 3.
