It's always more fun to play for the underdog anyway. If a player has to exploit the game mechanics to get ahead and then still looses, it's even more amusing.

I dont know about a bot being a "cheat" but all those so called uber solo ppl are not really solo. You shouldnt claim you solo unless you do it without a bot and actually solo.

Buffbots aren't cheating.

They are against the spirit of the game, though.

It has become the standard, just like wall-exploiting if you were gonna heal in the laby. Instead of just not doing it (and losing.) It became accepted as the norm and embraced as a combat necessity.

This is the way that the game has evolved.

Is it against the original creators' ideals for the game? Probably.

Is it straight up against the rules? Yes (exploiting), No (Buffbots)

I wouldn't call it cheating at all, since Buffbots don't break any rules; they are probably not what the original devs intended though. Once it became a way for Mythic to make 2x the cash, it was accepted and people moved on. It removed a niche player (a small niche, but there nonetheless)group and on the game went.

Players push envelopes though, especially when the goal of the game is to out-do everyone else.

Be the best realm, be in the best guild in that realm, be the best player in that guild in that realm, be the best Armsman (If you don't believe me I'll prove it or you can...;p), etc.

That mentality has caused the exploit seekers and cheaters to feel justified in what they do. Win.

It starts off with the "Well, there aren't any rules against it..." and evolves into "...I may as well, if they didn't want me to do it then it wouldn't be an option."

Ultimately, it was up to the players to police themselves in a sort of honor system and to that I say... LOL.

The few that claim to have honor are tying their own arms back because of the way the game works. Cheat to Win.

The playerbase should have never been trusted with that, but what was the alternative? Super policing the game with Everquest level douche CSR/GMs? Eww, no one would play it.

I could go on...and have...so I'll wrap up my little diatribe with this.

People cheat to win because they can. Because there's no real punishment for it. The spirit of this game has been long since lost and I'm not sure that anyone truthfully cares about it. Oh, sure there's nostalgia about the old days, but not enough to make people as a whole say..."I should do what was intended with this game, and not just what I can get away with."

Other than recently rezzed or people coming back from LD when is the last time you fought someone who was solo and unbuffed? Only a self buffing class that only needs to juggle a couple charges could say they don't use a bot and I bet most beg certain buffs off others. Last time I remember fighting unbuffed players on a regular basis was 7 or 8 years ago.

Asking the current player base, especially on teh VN, why they need to cheat to win is akin to walking into the projects and residents why they need to steal to survive.

The good neighbors moved out LONG ago. Sure here and there is old person who slipped through the cracks and stuck it out, but the VAST majority are long long gone never to look back.

The people whom you are asking this question to do not have the moral or ethical drive (for whatever reason) to even take honesty or integrity seriously.

You are getting the same type of responses that you would get if you walked into jail and asked the inhabitants why they feel they need to steal, and it shouldn't surprise you.

Anything along the lines you pursuing will just be discounted, blown off, or turned around on you to make you look bad. No one wants to think of themselves as a piece of @#$% cheater (which is looking in from the outside CLEARLY what most DAoC players now are) so they will not allow this subject to do more than scrape the surface before the mud slinging begins.

My honest opinion is that if you are one of the few left with a moral character, and it bothers you to be neck deep in the current cesspool that the community is, then it is probably time for you to move on. It's not a healthy environment. I know it's hard to let go of DAoC because it used to be such a great game, and of course your personal situation is not known to me (maybe you have a core group of solid friends you encase yourself with to shut out the slime).

And yes I agree that for the most part, the community is largely responsible for the decline of the game, but unfortunately teh intarweb allows all the lower forms of life to surface without fear of having to face responsibility for their actions.
