BTW if you want to really go funky.. you can run daoc+wine on a remote device and use VirtualGL to bring the 3D display over to your local computer... have been running my bot like this for 1+ year, my actual machine with the beefy vidcard is in another room and use virtualgl to display the game on my laptop with crappy integrated intel graphics. (network between the 2 computers is over a PowerLAN adapter)
It's also doable to run it over the internet, but mostly to craft/idle in game

After playing last night with 11.04 Ubuntu, I come to hate unity desktop.
Right in the middle of a BIG battle, I got a bit to close to the side of the screen, and WAM, the stupid slide out quickbar shows up.
As soon as it did, the graphics of the game locked up fully. All sound and combat messages were still going, just couldn't do anything
with it.. Had to actually reboot the system to end the process, and clean the desktop back up.
I'll either try running it in desktop emulation mode, or move back to 10.04.
One of the other things I don't like about Unity, there is no way to currently turn off all the antimation on the desktop.
Compwiz or however it's spelled, doesn't seem to work.
Due to your post, I began reading some on the new Natty Unity desktop. According to what I read, Compiz DOES work, you just have to install the CompizConfig Settings Manager (CCSM) from the Ubuntu Software Center (USC). You may need to check out a couple of the entries at this link to find how they recommend making it work.
http://www.webupd8.org/search/label/11.04?max-results=10
Also, as far as the Unity Launcher sliding out during full-screen gaming, you may be able to disable the corner/side launching action from CCSM as well ( http://www.webupd8.org/2011/04/final-ubuntu-1104-beta-2-has-been.html ). Just disable all settings for it, then re-enable when you are done gaming, if you so choose.
What I think you are experiencing is the equivalent to alt/tabbing in DAoC full screen (not windowed mode) - my Ubuntu install does not like it, and the result I get mirrors your description: all game activity sounds like it is still going on, but the video is frozen. You can still run around and cast spells and do all the actions you could as if you had turned your monitor off.
To remedy this, I simply /q and relogged. A relog always fixed my video lock.

This is getting a bit off topic, but, another thing I can't stand about 11.04 and the unity desktop is, that when Firefox or any other program
is open, all your info buttons are hidden in the title bar. May move to Kubuntu..
Anyways, the ram's in DAoC are really weird looking while playing now too.. they were not this way before I moved over..

If you do not wish to use the Unity desktop environment, you can choose to boot into the 'classic' Ubuntu desktop from the log on screen.
Along the bottom taskbar, about in the middle, you will see the word 'Ubuntu'. Click it for a drop-up menu and choose Ubuntu classic before you actually log in. You can switch this without restarting your computer, just log out and do it.

All well and good, however, its my home computer, and no one else lives here.. No reason to have to login.
So, I have the system auto login for me at boot. I could make another user, I guess..
I've already moved back to 10.04 with all the updates, and its running correctly. So, I guess, untill something else comes along, thats where I'll be for awhile.
BTW, therinS the new background is fun!

Newsguy, here is a link you may find useful to ensure you get the 'classic' desktop with 11.04; read the reference to 'GDMSETUP', as I think that will fix your issue with Unity.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+question/154866
Be aware, I have not moved up to 11.04, so I have not been able to test this. Anyways, I had disabled most of my logins with an install of WUBI, then when I moved to a dual-boot situation I left all logins and keyrings in place.

Its OK.. I've already moved back to 10.04.
But, I'll keep that info handy, and make sure this tread is printed, written down and all that, so
the information here is handy.

@people who think wine development is lagging... well it's not. It's being developed in a "clean" policy; no hacks. Developers and community seem to be very strict in many aspects... Especially in bugzilla comments and reports
It's development is not lagging, they're just focusing on something that "they" want to think is the most important thing to do. Which is why appdb and wine bugzilla have votes.
Daoc, as it is currently and unfortunately, pretty marginal game, does not get too many votes. So, any issues reported to daoc alone, probably gets ignored. Fortunately, since daoc is pretty old game, the issues it has in wine world, are usually shared with many other programs. Which means it's more likely to get fixed.
All this rambling and I get to the actual point... Cedega, wine and crossover games, are to my knowledge all based on wine (not 100% sure about crossover games, although fairly certain about it, seen it been mentioned on the wine forums to be just that etc). Cedega and crossover games tend to have different priorities vs wine project. So, the commercial programs are lagging behind just as bad as wine itself. At least from the point of daoc. But that's all a gut feeling, save for the dependencies.
Personally, I'd stick with the free version...

G'day,
Is Cedega still being developed? Just looked at the Transgaming site and... well.... frankly got very confused!! Looks as i they're mostly developing stuff for the Mac. As for a Linux product .. well it was a confusing site.
BTW. I used Cedega back when to play DAoC when I first moved over to Linux - wasn't bad back then.
Cheers
