@Finglor
I have WINE installed up to 1.3.14, so I don't think I need to run all those steps as they seem to be related only to installing wine. On WINE HQ, I found a line to add WINE to the Ubuntu repositories, so I should get updates as they come out.
If I am correct in the above statement, then all I need to do is save a text file as the .patch filename, then do the step part way down your post to apply it. Am I going to miss anything? I dont want to 'Newsguy' my OS install (ha ha).
Also, as I am still getting used to all the terminal punctuation, is the '<' character and the '~' character supposed to be typed in, or do they represent another longer line of code you omitted for sake of length?
I am still a bit lost on enabling Catacombs models.

You need to copy and paste the one thats on WineHQ, just as it is.. otherwise, you'll get a error
in line 6.. (which is what I did, when I used the patch that's here).
yea, I understand about not changing OS's.. Their a pain... But, I had a hard drive die, and found
this OS.. Stable, nice looking, and works.. And thats all I could ask for. Ubuntu 10.10 is very buggy
to me, and the keyring bug is what made me want to move...

Guess what? It crashes!
If it crashes when you select the install directory, the workaround is to ensure that the directory structure is created before running the installer.

No issues at all..
Since I keep a backup on a DVD of the game, each time they patch, I just unzipped it.. dropped the
folder in the C: in Wine, and linked the exe file..
I hung out for about 30 mins last night on a trial account.. listening to my old guild on Vent, and
watching the game play.. lvl 2 toon, in NF.. oh, how fun
waiting for some $$$ to trickle in to re-sub.

G'day,
The Dark Age installer works fine for me - however, there's a little trick to get it running. And that's creating the folder directories or else it will crash. Here's what you do...
1. Go into your file manager (nautilus or dolphin..) and go to your home directory.
2. Go to the menu View and click on 'Show Hidden Files'
3. You now should see a lot of folders and files...
4. find .wine folder
5. open to drive_c folder
6. open Program Files folder
7. right click and 'create folder'
8. call it Electronic Arts
9. open this folder
10. rick click and 'create folder'
11. call it Dark Age of Camelot.
Now start the installer again .. it should work! (tested on versions 1.1.24, 1.1.42 and 1.2.1)
Apologies for the patch .. it was the older one that I used on 1.1.24. WineHQ does have the latest...
Good Hunting!
Finglor
PS. Just did the whole process from scratch on a friends computer last week (only hitch was my patch) .. so it really should work!

Just to keep this up toward to the top, for anyone else wishing to
try Linux...
Linux Mint is just what the Windows folks needed.
The user interface is very close, Heck, I even have all my
quick tabs, my open programs on the bottom bar, just like windows.
When I click the Windows button(start button)(menu button on Linux Mint)
It brings up a menu that looks very close to Vista/Win7's menu.
Easy to use, re-arrange if needed too.
I've been running it for nearly 2 weeks now, and not 1 problem.
The thing is rock solid! Install it, or put it on a old computer
then add Wine, and put DAoC on it.. You'll be amazed at how well
it work.

For ppl who have never used linux and are hesitant to partition, especially since Win 7/Vista chucks a spaz if you fiddle with MBRs and partitions, however there is WUBI...
http://wubi.sourceforge.net/
What it does is install Ubuntu like a programme in Windows - its an .exe file. And if ya don't like it just go to add/remove progs and get rid of it. Real Simple!
The installer will ask you a few questions, including how big a section of your HD you want it to take (30gbs is the largest).
It's just a safe and foolproof way of installing Linux on any 'puter.
Cheers

I did the step to save the updated file from WINE's website as snoodpatch.patch, but when I type in "patch -p0 < ~/snoodpatch.patch" OR with -p1, either with a space between the < and the ~, or without the space, I get an error in terminal reading:
patching file dlls/wined3d/directx.c
Hunk #1 FAILED at 1928
1 out of 1 hunk FAILED -- saving rejects to file dlls/wined3d/directx.c.rej
I copy and pasted the text from the link at ( http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id-10832 ).
At first, I could not even save the text to a file, but it might have been because I was denied permission to save it to the /home folder, and instead saved it inside my /home/username folder.
Am I missing something?
====
As an additional Linux note, I have a parts lookup program which refuses to run in WINE. It acts like it is going to start, then the process (apparently) just ceases to run. The first time I run it after a reboot it hangs on for about 10 seconds; each subsequent time it dies after about 2 seconds.
Here is the text in terminal after I cd to the .wine folder where I installed the program and execute the .exe with ' wine st21.exe '. st21.exe is the name of the windows executable from the program.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3541098/Unsaved%20Document%201.txt
If you could help me decipher what the errors mean, I MIGHT be able to fumble around enough (with explicit directions) to make this program work. Please don't make me Virtualbox XP.
Thank you
