I have a different kind of loyalty: Friend Loyalty.
The primary reason I play this game is because I have made friends with many people along the way. If I can't play with them, and am not in the mood to solo, I'll just do something else.
All the time I'll text a buddy and ask if he's on, then log on Mid. He'll join vent and I'll find out he's on Alb/Hib. Generally, we only have 1-3 hours to play. If we have to wait 1 hour to play together, guess what we're not going to do.
Us not playing is not good for anyone. This game needs people playing it or it will shut down.
Sure people relic hop, but I really could care less. Forcing me onto one realm isn't going to make me siege.
If you want to give a small bonus to players who only play one realm, go right ahead. A 2% rp bonus will be enough for some people and not be overpowering.
Honestly I think players with the relics at their back should be worth more RPs. It's a lot harder to kill a group that has 20% bonus to magic/melee, so make them worth 20% more rps to kill. Then you'll be more likely to see people flocking to the realms (notice realms, not realm singular) that doesn't have the relics.
A forced realm loyalty will do nothing but put another nail in the coffin.
Just think of it this way: lets say you like the game HALO, but if it's the only game you are allowed to play, the amount of time you spend playing video games will decrease significantly.
The trouble is that this mentality favors the hardcore players over new players and "realm-loyal players". Imagine, as a new player, finally getting a toon up to 50 with a template, MLs, etc. only to find that fights keep going badly because swarms of other players keep jumping sides. It was always bad enough with natural population imbalances, but it's even worse with little to no realm timer in a cluster. That's why I'm suggesting a slightly longer (and working) realm timer, but not so long that it ruins your time as well. At 15 minutes, it's enough to slow down hoppers while short enough that you can go bio, grab snacks, and you're good to go. 5 minutes is just laughable, and no realm timer would be a nail in the coffin itself.

I think the imagination is the only place where this actually happens.

Don't punish those who wish to realm hop, but do reward those who choose to be realm loyal. That way the whiners who like to log according to relics etc have nothing to complain about but those who remain loyal to realm regardless of relics get some kind of reward. Bottom line you have to 1. allow realm hoppers to hop, 2. reward those who remain loyal to realm. Its a win/win and I'm shocked you haven't done this yet.

There are too many problems with trying to lock players out of their toons in a particular realm for long periods of time when they want to switch. Instead Mythic should use bonuses to encourage players to stick with one realm. For instance:
- relic bonuses only affect your characters if you have been playing that realm for at least 24 hours
- rp, bp, and xp bonuses only affect your characters if you have been playing that realm for at least 24 hours
- add an additional 1% rp/bp/xp bonus per day you play a realm with a cap at, say, 50%
- buff npcs will give an additional 5 points per stat if you have been playing in a realm for at least 24 hours

Ok...my suggestion is...for everyone's MAIN account that you log in with there should
be a substantial RP bonus if you ONLY HAVE one realm's toons on that account. Of course,
I'm biased because I have only ever played albs. But..there should be a definite reward
for a very loyal player...especially a casual one. Should be easy to check as well for EA/Mythic.
There will never be a way around Xrealming. But for the small percentage that have only
played one Realm's toons there should be a static reward for the realm loyalty..like a RP bonus.
This of course means you have NO other toons from an opposing realm on one account...even lowbies.
Would it increase realm loyalty? Only if the RP bonus was substantial..but those that have only stuck with one realm should be rewarded...and it might even convince the xrealmers to jump the xrealm ship and stick with their perspective realms!
Just a thought. Like I said, I'm biased.

Any bonus system ends up being viewed as a punishment by those who do not get the bonus and there are many reasons for players to switch realms that have nothing to do with hopping to chase battles. Because of clustering many have valid reasons for periodically changing their realm.
Also, those who have high RPs and are not worried much about RPs will not have their realm hopping slowed at all by an RP bonus system.
I can see how those who love to hop, to chase battles and such, would hate even a short 15 min timer because a timer is the only truly definitive way to hinder that kind of hopping.

I am liking all the suggestions to reward people for playing the same realm.
Couldn't they do something like the way factions work in game with the monsters. I.e. if you kill a certain type of monster you increase your faction with another type of monster.
So for example everytime your account plays Midgard, your Midgard rating goes up, but your Albion and Hibernia rating goes down.
Based on your rating you could get access to realm bonuses, increased XP and RP's, you could end up in a scenario where certain NPC's don't talk to you or you don't get access to certain features on items. They could introduce quests where you can raise your faction within a realm. Getting xp, rp, completing quests etc all add to your rating.

I actually like the idea of giving some type of bonus to realm loyalty, but I'd like to see the realm timers also reset to at least an hour. There was actually a lot of good ideas in this thread. Hopefully Kai or someone from Mythic has actually read it.

I really like the concept of "realm faction". It could even be used for things like faction with new NPCs/guards in the frontiers. I haven't fleshed out the NPC idea, so I don't know if it would work well or be interesting. Never the less, using realm faction as the mechanism for unlocking bonuses would be pretty neat.

- Possibly reduce RPs earned for the first hour or two after switching realms
(like this, prefer 24hrs, include BP, maybe gold too)
Agree. Simply reward based on continual realm involvement.
