I agree with the original poster and understand the worthlessness of the currency as of today. Mythic wanted to take farmers out of the equation so they instituted the ability to gain items through farming scales, Sidi souls and glass. This is not a bad idea, as long as the amounts you gain are not absurd.
In my opinion, the amounts you get for these quests is absurd. It has made items worthless and currency worthless because it's bang or bust. You are either going to shell out 175-200 plat on an item you can't easily farm from ML 10, or you are going to pay 1-5 plat for an item you are too lazy to farm scales for. There is no middle ground.
I don't blame Mythic for this totally, for their plans have made access to items much easier for all players, which they should be given credit for and has put a damper on farmers. They did a good job on this.
In my opinion, Mythic should get rid of coppers and institute mithrils. They could use the same long int number type in the program, except they would now just call platinums mithrils instead. Of course, when they switch this over, they would have to round all coppers down to silvers, silvers to golds, and golds to platinums, and then everyone would start out with nothing in the mithrils column, but have exactly what they had before.
The point of all this is to make platinums the main trading currency (which it really already is), and give people the ability to find a balance between ML 10 items and how many hundreds of plat they want to spend for it.
Another option is that Mythic updates other items like Sidi so that their stats are slightly better than ML 10 for a while, so that people can switch templates and those items will be more affordable again and people have to re-template. Items are not expensive only because they are hard to farm, they are also expensive because people want them. If something is better, those hard to farm items will be cheaper and farmed less, and eventually become more expensive again, but not more expensive than the time value of the new Sidi items (which should require 1000 Sidi souls).
The thing missing is the balance as the original poster mentions. The currency is becoming worthless if a farming group can run 8 chars doing the quests and rake in 8 chars * 8 quests * 224g per hour for 14.336 plat per hour, plus the glass and afrit hand in items.
