it's not a thinly veiled argument that is meant to bully.
as a software developer or engineer, you should ALWAYS weigh the risks when developing or designing systems (more in the designing and software engineers).
Any software engineer that DOESN'T weigh the risks isn't a very good software engineer in my opinion.
I'm not trying to bully anyone or change anyone's opinions. I was simply offering my reasoning for the questions asked. It is not up to me to tell anyone what they can and cannot do. I can however approve and disprove of their actions however, just as anyone can agree or disagree with my opinion.
While I can think of a few reasons for setting the idle timeout high (most were already meantioned) noone of those reasons outweigh the negative consequences of doing so in my opinion (other than bot software).
I don't see any other beneficial reason that would outweigh the negative impact of this. And I do not feel that leeching in a fellow is an acceptible use. IMO, leeching is almost as bad as UCM is. Unfortunately, Turbine hasn't provided a lot of decent ways to level tradeskill characters, so for tradeskill characters, I have more tollerance. For characters that are not tradeskill only however, I do not feel that have any reason to be leeching XP for longer than the idle timeout allows. But that is a completely different topic.
Back onto the original topic, no one has to agree with me. It doesn't change my opinion. Just as I don't expect my opinion to change anyone elses. I just offer information to possibly help some people get a more complete picture. Maybe I have showed them something, or made them think about something, that they may not have seen otherwise. It's not always about changing a person. It is about enlightening and providing MORE of a picture. Just as I take everyone elses arguments into my mind and think about them.

Toon A is your main char and you are hunting with him. You make a fellowship with Toon B, your tinker on another account and place him at a safe spot.
Case a) you got 2 displays and 2 keyboards, so you are semi present on both chars.
Case b) you got 1 display and 1 keyboard (playing in fullscreen). You are only present at one char.
Facts: your Toon A is getting XP and your Toon B is getting XP.
Case A: ACM or UCM ?
Case B: ACM or UCM ?
I think on case B you can use an IDLE plugin as an UCM tool....

to be UCM you have to be away from the computer, AND being targetted by critters when you heal or whatever.
Just because you are in a fellow getting xp doesnt make you UCM
but then again, ive not read closely on this issue

Maybe you are right, im not sure:
[..]
"..Use of unauthorized third-party software or macros with the Software may be prohibited in the sole discretion of Turbine. Specifically, you may not use third-party software which allows your character to gain experience points or items by engaging in combat without being at the keyboard, ready to respond to Turbine staff on demand (this activity is commonly called a “Combat Macroâ€)..."
[..]
1) you must be at keyboard. Case B ??? !
2) you must be gaining XP. Case A and B !
3) engaged in combat. hmmmmm ???
But i dont want to stop the wishlist for IDLE plugins. I just thought about the UCM aspect... nevermind...

Not a thin one at all, shows the integrity of the author IMO.

Ok, so what are the "negative" consequences of being in game....
1. Uses up internet bandwidth
2. Takes up one of the valueable and in short supply connections to the over utilized AC servers.
Pros:
1. Someone asked for it so it would fit a need, even if I do not fully understand it.
Gee your right, glad we did this whole "ethics" thing about being a software developer.
Maybe you should put your prejudices to the side when "attempting" to justify your reasoning. Because you are so thinly hiding your true intentions behind your argument you are not even starting to justify it.
Yes, developers should weigh the pros and cons of software or items they develope, but they should use some common sense and leave their prejudices aside. If all software developers took the approach I see some of the decal devs took then Linux would have never been developed, after all it can be used as a tool to hack other systems. Office would have never been developed because you can use spreadsheets to computer the hourly salary of your co-workers which you should not be allowed to know. Windows would have never been developed since it is so easy to hack it is just causing long term problems. And computers themselves would have never been developed because they can be used to steal identities, hack into bank systems, and put many of the people who did manual labor in the past out of work.

OH Well!
As said already, this idler can do NOTHING to help someone UCM by itself (it wont even override El Tanks 5 minute shutdown, with an idler that changes the idle logout time, el tank will still stop fighting after 5 minutes of no keyboard input) and if you use lifetank, you dont need an idler, it fights for you AND keeps you ingame both at the same time without any other prog needed besides decal itself.
so Masked, you seem to be the one that is reading a LOT more into the OPs post than is warrented
Most a person can do is stay fellowed and logged in, as long as that guy is somewhere that can not be effected/effect mobs, then it is not against the rules.
