This thread is tl;dr, but in case you haven't gotten a conclusion; do you happen to live in an apartment? I had the same thing happen to me, and it was because of the signal being split within the apartment building. So I would routinely call the Comcast guy, he'd come over and connect my wire to a higher strength signal, and I'd be fine. Then, eventually, someone else would do the same and I'd get booted to a lower connection and the cycle would start over. I eventually fixed this by switching to U-verse.

I havent tried running it without the router for a long period (that would mean single-tasking the net which would be a pain -- plus that changes your net address and could make them think you are a hacker or something in a game and ban your account)

Where did you get those ideas from?

I have a similar problem.

I don't think my DSL filters are working problem because it seems to be randomly associated with incoming calls only...

Outgoing is fine, most incoming are fine, my dad always knocks it out.

And yes it does look like docsis 3.0 is probably the culprit. Maybe with about 8 hours of work and a month of wait comcast will upgrade my modem. They have the worst customer service on the planet.

They have a service place 15 minutes from here -- but we arent considered in the area of that service place and they wont help us with anything -- the one they send us to is a 2 hour drive in solid traffic into a nasty city area.

you want the modem so bad then quitcherbitchin and go buy your own FFS. they DO sell them retail and you will save on your monthly bill for not having the equipment fee.
here I'll even hook you up with some stats.

Frankly swapping the modem with one you get from the service center is prolly the way I would go even if there was a drive simply because you have absolutely NO idea if you are fixing a damn thing.

what model do you currently have? if its DOCSIS 1.1 compliant then I cant see how it would fix a thing and even if it ISN'T I still doubt its the reason its doing what its doing. I have dealt with lots of customers using DOCSIS 1.0 compliant modems (which are actually end of life at this point) that are working just fine.

EDIT: even if it IS a pain I would go cable direct to the modem and leave a continuous ping going to comcast.com (the reason I specify THAT website is that its on the Comcast network) for a few hours then ctrl-c and see if you dropped any traffic.

There's many good security reason to not bypass your router, but there's not a single thing in this statement that isn't wrong. You IP is assigned by your ISP, it could but probably won't change when you do this, and no game is going to assume you're a l33t hax0r because your IP address changed slightly as nearly everyone on the planet is on a dynamic IP address.

Cables that aren't getting moved around all the time rarely go bad, but splitters do. A cable splitter is your most likely culprit inside the house, but your problem is definitely most likely to be coming from outside. Maybe not all the way down at Comcast's facility, but from your house to the local junction is very likely to have the problem.

Actually Comcast often gives a new IP if the MAC changes.

if you want a new IP all you gotta do us unscrew the cable wire from the back of your cable modem and leave it off for like 5 solid minutes. the DHCP lease will expire and when your device comes back onto the cable network the provisioning system will hand it a new IP.

it aint that.

if you crest the 250 gig per month for a few months in a row, you get some hate mail from the service assurance (read abuse) department.

The MAC they usually see is the modem, and if they do sniff the next device downstream, then you probably had to clone your computer's MAC into the router anyhow. Still, actually getting a new IP is certainly not a problem -- it rarely if ever changes on its own, but the IP is only leased for two weeks at a time.

Dialup users (ah, ancient times) would get a new IP every time they called.

Mine stays solid for years at a time, even if I do this or specifically request a new IP lease. It just gets handed the same number.
