The internet radio stops playing, web pages dont load, and if you are in a game you get kicked out -- then a few seconds later it all comes back.

Thing is it does it at random about 5 times per day (which is VERY annoying for games) which makes it hard for me to figure out what is happening.

Is it the line, something resetting, the router, something else?

This is comcast internet but it only started happening in October -- before that the net was solid.

could be a million things, have the comcast guy come over and test the signal strength. Could be poor wiring in an old house. Could be a faulty modem.

When it goes down for 6-12 seconds you could try running a trace route and seeing if it is able, or is having high ping, going to the router. If it is then it is the router but if your LAN is still fast then it is a cable modem/line going to house

have you completely power cycled the modem/router since it started? unplug them both for a good 30 seconds or more.

if that doesn't work my next thing to try would be bypassing the router if you have one to see if thats the problem. if it still happens i'd make comcast swap out the modem and see if a different modem fixes it. if it still does it i'd have to assume its likely something on comcasts end. more often than not something like this is the modem or router though.

Note it was solid for years.

And yes I have cycled both. I havent tried running it without the router for a long period (that would mean single-tasking the net which would be a pain -- plus that changes your net address and could make them think you are a hacker or something in a game and ban your account)

I had a very similar problem on my DSL less than a month ago. I beat my head against the wall checking everything on my end for around a week. The tech comes out and tests the line from their box across the street. Turns out the line had a short in it somewhere. They put me on another line and it has been flawless since.

-Edit-

Mine had also been solid for years.

if you've had the modem for a while it could be that, those things tend to break down rather often. I'm not sure but I think Comcast started charging people for new modems. I'm a Uverse customer now but when I was with comcast they would send you a new modem for free if your old one went bad.

obviously try cycling the power on the modem first and see if that helps, do all the obvious things first.

Yes it did start around the same time as that october snowstorm that took out cable for a full week.

Oh one other thing while I mention it -- sometimes like JUST NOW -- it will do it twice separated by a small number of minutes.

We had issues like this at my grandmother's house. It ended up being the connections to the house right outside.
