There are several reasons why I willingly buy these cookies.
- they are insanely delicious. If you've never had one, you can't even imagine. They are nothing like store-bought cookies. I can make homemade cookies with the best of them (snickerdoodles are my favorite things to make) but I don't always want to bake and I don't always have the time.
- they are FRESH. You're not buying something that might have sat on the shelf for months, loaded with preservatives to keep them "fresh". It's more like buying from a bakery that doesn't use preservatives, so they make everything fresh each day. "Day old" bread is sold at a discount. These cookies are like that, although the shelf life is longer- but it's a matter of weeks, not months or even more than a year. More like the shelf life of cookies you'd make yourself.
- they are quality. Again, you're getting good basic ingredients. Flour, eggs, sugar. Not high fructose corn syrup and a dozen ingredients you can't even pronounce.
- they are HUGE. Imagine a CD or a DVD. That's how big around they are. And they're a good half inch thick or thicker, depending on the cookie.
- they are made by someone I like, someone I trust, and someone I'm willing to support. She's not a huge faceless factory paying her workers minimum wage with no health benefits and crappy working conditions. I'm paying a bit more, just as I would when I buy fresh local fruits and vegetables at the farmer's market, but there are real benefits to that, in my opinion, and I'm willing to pay more for it.
- just because it's cheaper doesn't mean it's a better item or a better value. Wal-Mart is the perfect example of this, with cheap filler foods and cheap filler goods and shady business practices. Are you honestly going to argue that it's better to buy cookies from Wal-Mart than murron, just because they're cheaper? I'm not knocking people who shop there, if that's truly all they can afford, but I'm in a good enough position that I am willing to pay for local/organic/quality foods/goods whenever feasible, and I don't mind at all splurging every once in a while on these cookies. If I was eating one a day yeah that'd be excessive, but I doubt anyone is doing that!
