Extinction? Extinction will only happen with an extraterrestrial event that in effect "destroys" the planet.

Almost any situation that happens on planet, be it biological, geological, or climate will leave some survivors.

Most definitely a super virus. Our overuse of medicine will result in a disease immune to anything we have.

Granted this may not lead to extinction, but there is always that possibility. More so than extraterrestrial events imo.

ice age due to asteroid strike or massive volcano

Global killer virus

NOT zombies, zombies is stupid

However, having studied a bit of medicine and microbiology, there are some very nasty viruses in the world. On top of that there are some pretty nasty people that have played with genetics and viruses enough to know how to makes things that kill you dead, spread easily, and completely bypass the human immune system.

Smallpox has probably killed more people than any other disease or war. Supposedly the WHO eradicated it but there is no guarantee some idiot doesn't have a large supply of in a freezer somewhere.

Everyone knows about Ebola and there have been no cases in humans in the US but ....

The influenza pandemic of 1918 killed somewhere between one half and three quarters of a million people in the Unites States alone. One in four people were affected. Some estimates go as high as 100 million people died world wide in a relatively short 2 year span of the relatively simple flu.

What are the chances of some bug or virus out there, somewhere in guano filled cave in South America or Africa, migrating from bat, or a flea, to a bird or a pig and jumping to humans in a strain or mutation never seen before, more virulent, that that travels in the air like smoke, and there is absolutely no defense or vaccine to combat it ...? It's all happened before. It's not science fiction. It could happen again.

My vote is similar, but assumes the release (accidental or deliberate by some nutjob) of a weaponized virus from some lab.

No one thing will cause the extinction of the human race.

There are several events that can, all by themselves, end the human race if they ever happen. A few are even on your list. Science tells us they WILL happen as their chances of occurrence are not zero, the only question is which event will it be. The one event we are 100% positive will end us, if we are still around that is, would be when our sun finally runs out of fusionable material. As it turns into a Red Giant and swells, immense heat and solar winds will blast the surface of the Earth into molten slag until the Sun finally collapses into a White Dwarf. Sadly, our Sun is far too small to go out with the style and panache of a supernova. It would need to be at least 8 times larger to do so.

Supposedly in about a billion years the temp of the planet will be so that the water starts to evaporate, 4 billion before the sun goes all red giant on us. Point is, the sun is getting hotter, so we don't have to wait for it to consume us before it ends us.
