This is a tough one to answer. Should there be a national language? Yes, there should be.
Language sets your frame of mind. It allows seamless communication from one person to another with clear cut meaning and direction. Throw in translation and sometimes the mood or even meaning is lost. Arabic is a great example of this problem. You might say the right words but if you place the accent wrong or emphasize the wrong portion of your phrasing you might get taken the wrong way.
I know there is no law specifying a national language but you can infer a national standard by states that have laws governing our public schools which require English be taught and is required to graduate.
Edit: Snide comment, but those who make the biggest noise are catering to the voters by dancing to their toon. I'm going to go out on a limb here, but the people who complain the most about "language" issues were probably not born here and live in the community with others of the same origin (balkanization) or rely on their children if they are older.
Now you have the middle class which is predominantly english speaking breaking their back to support the welfare of minority groups who couldn't get a job in Quick Check because they cannot say hello and look you in the eye with confidence.
OR they came here illegally, can apply for state funding and get a college education all bought and payed for by you, the American worker who gets trashed whenever they raise a simple issue such as one language that is required.
BUT
I guess it is ok to rape the system and cause us to pay billions because of a language barrier.
If these people knew english, they would have the confidence to get out there and get a job to get out of the welfare system but the government actually exploits them and these people are blind to the fact that the system they rely on is killing them in the end.

This. Speak your native language all you want, but when you are ordering food, in a store, or talking to a nurse in a hospital and none of the people can understand you, then it's your own damn fault for not trying to learn the language of the country you are in. In America, despite what many may think about this place being a "melting pot", the prevailing language is ENGLISH. Learn it or leave.

in AZ when I worked in call centers, we had spanish speaking reps, they made all of $1 more per hour than regular english only reps.

Since there was hundred of languages here before the United States... and we have added dozens more since the formation... I just do not see any rationale.
America is great at innovation because of its diversity... we have people from all over thinking about problems in different ways because of how they grew up...
Making 1 language will do nothing but hurt us... just because people think "their America" is correct and want to impose it on other people does not make it right.

Maybe if all the natives had shared a single language, they would have been able to share their knowledge more easily, progressed their technology and wouldn't have gotten steamrolled by the English speaking white man.
