You don't see how forcing the use of a presently evolving language is short sighted?

Kind of like not being realistic as the inefficiencies of not being able to communicate effectively.

If you want to live here as a citizen you should have some minimum level of competency of the language that is used.

Is there any regulation or legislation out there forcing the government to make translations?

The neo-bagger-religio-con doesn't really feel anything about freedom of speech. They step aside when Stern gets hammered, cry for Imus, and aren't even able to comprehend that Rush is part of "The Media." One shouldn't hate them for being dim-witted any more than you would hate someone for being short or dyslexic.

http://www.avantpage.com/professional-government-translation-government-translation.html

Because our government has no official language and due to a growing population of immigrants, United States government agencies need a source for accurate, high quality translations.

Why? Government agencies are required by law to provide public information accessibility to all individuals, including those with low English proficiency, as part of compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Title VI states that discrimination on the ground of race, color, or national origin shall not occur in connection with programs and activities receiving Federal financial assistance. In order to prevent this discrimination, it is necessary for government organizations to communicate with everyone in a language they can understand.

Not on the federal side to the best of my knowledge, states and counties however, are a different story.

if i were to go to a foreign country to live and work, i would expect to have to learn the language of the country i'm going to. i should not expect them to cater to me. why should it be any different for someone coming to this country?

I think we should adopt a national language or languages, but until we do, I don't think we can demand anyone speak a specific language.

doesn't matter that much to me anyway, I have a horrible time understanding people who speak English with a heavy accent anyway.

This. Speak your native language all you want, but when you are ordering food, in a store, or talking to a nurse in a hospital and none of the people can understand you, then it's your own damn fault for not trying to learn the language of the country you are in. In America, despite what many may think about this place being a "melting pot", the prevailing language is ENGLISH. Learn it or leave.
