Island of Kesmai was the first MUD online back when CompUserve used to rape you by the baud rate per HOUR.
I don't remember if CON originated there but I know MOB did among many other things.
The Arcane Guild was the first online guild and when people joined it they would reroll to add TAG at the end of their name to show that they were a member. Hence, the term Guild Tag. Other guilds followed. The second was NAG (Non Arcane Guild).

We used it in DAoC all the time
Orange con mobs, red con mobs, purple con, green con, yellow con, blue con and grey con  in a total drunk random order
Yellow con == same level as you
Orange con mobs were 1-3 or so (used to have a +), red con mobs were ++ and purple was +++ |

daoc was the first instance i heard it, never played EQ though.

Mob
An AI controlled monster. ‘Mob’ originally comes from the MUD era, where it was short for ‘mobile’, to differentiate monsters that would patrol a set of rooms as opposed to monsters which would stay in one place until killed.
Con or Check
The "Check" command can be found in the Command Menu that pops up when you select a target, or by using /check or CTRL+C. It allows you to view the level and equipment on other players, and gauge the strength of enemies.
