Heard it a lot in DAOC from former EQ players.

starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the streets,
angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection
to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night.

It existed long before Everquest. We had a consider system in Gemstone IV and Dragonrealms back before Any of the graphic MMOs existed. In Dragonrealms there was 2 commands to do it... you could Consider or Appraise your opponent, and depending on your appraisal skill it would tell you either nothing at all, or give you details right down to how much health it had, what its chances or hitting you were, what your chances of hitting it were, if you could skin it, any treasure it had on it etc..

I vaguely remember Dragonrealms and have heard of Gemstone.

I, on the other hand, prefer a command-line system 'cause i'm so hardcore
/north /north *You encounter an [Avatar of the god Set]!*
/cast sheild *sheild spell unavailable*
/csat shield *csat: unknown command*
*[Avatar of Set] beheads [Peasant]*

I always understood "mob" to mean "mobile".

Con and Mobile both came from MUD's.

A text-based MUD I played in the mid 1990's had a "consider" command. You used it to check your chances against an enemy.

> consider rabbit
- Your target is greatly weaker than you.
> consider bear
- Your target is moderately stronger than you.
> consider dragon
> Your target is insurmountable.

Never heard of "con". Does anyone know where "mob" came from? I've heard it's short for "mobile object".
