Never heard of "con". Does anyone know where "mob" came from? I've heard it's short for "mobile object".

mob
a crowd/group at a camp

??

Yes but people use "mob" to refer to single targets.

the only game i played where it was a frequently used term was ffxi. and in that game how tough the mob is was alot more important than most games so that might have been why it was more common there.

yeah i saw it there, and in daoc. not much outside of that though.. most games i played after them listed levels directly and i rarely see the term used now.

It's for sure from MUDS

Still remember playing Red Dragon and Trade Wars

I used to run a BBS that hosted a few games as well as some naughty areas

I loved that my parents bought me my own phone line they got tired of the signalling noises on the phone all the time

Everquest had it first. The term originated from the command used for it which was /consider or /con.

I'll meet you in Freeport, just let me get a sow and bind in Rivervale first... I don't want to run through Kithicor Forest at night without one.

I like FYC's answer best, but the first time I saw it was EQ and it meant consider.

I, on the other hand, prefer a command-line system 'cause i'm so hardcore
/north /north *You encounter an [Avatar of the god Set]!*
/cast sheild *sheild spell unavailable*
/csat shield *csat: unknown command*
*[Avatar of Set] beheads [Peasant]*
