Yes, RPG's in general during the 16 bit and 32 bit era were heavily influenced by Final Fantasy and other Jrpg's.

Somewhere around the 64/ 128 bit era developers started moving away from 2d isometric sprite-based graphics and more towards 3D.

America companies never liked the japanese way, all their RPG's are usually going to be 3D. To me the difference between the american idea of an RPG and the japanese idea of an RPG is like the difference between Oblivion and Final Fantasy.

to me the difference is stat crunching.

jrpgs tend to be heavy on the stat crunching, which I like seeing all those numbers get bigger and bigger.

american rpgs seem to try and eliminate stats as much as possible

In that case I don't see how you can say that they "were never that popular"... Most people put EarthBound, Chrono, FF3 and so forth towards the top of their best games ever list. *shrug*

Meh, hardcore gamers recognize. I don't think the genre itself proved popular enough to live on for very long in the minds of the masses. Where is the next Ogre Battle, the next Breath of Fire, the next Earthbound or Chrono Trigger or Suikoden? Where is the clamor for these games? There really isn't any, only a niche group of gamers like us.

I didn't even know it was big until Penny-Arcade did a comic about it. Funny strip, by the way.

Well, you have a point that they're not as popular now. I think it has to do with the turn based portion of them more than anything else, though.

People just prefer the sandbox style of gameplay I guess. These days instead of every other RPG being a ripoff of Final Fantasy, they all seem to be ripoffs of Elder Scrolls.

I prefer action style rpgs. Something in the lines of Demon's Souls.
