They sure turn into fire-breathing buttholes when one drops in a group and they don't win it though.
Meh... you'll have that with anything though. It's not just vanity items. It's a reflection of how they behave in real life.
That's why I prefer guild runs... especially when I'm the guild leader/officer. At the first sign of whiny little brat attitudes, /gkick.

I explain Farmville with the collector types. Some people are really into those little things you can mail each other and collecting in games.
There was always that one person in WoW that was after every vanity pet in the game.
This is just such a dime-a-dozen idea.
Edit: Yeah, I think it was probably the timing too. It was one of the early iPhone ones right?
in my most recent times playing WoW I had a hunter and was going after all the special rare spawn pets. It was kinda fun doing the grind in lower levels just having some kind of small goal for each section.

That's a little different though because you actually use them all the time. The vanity pets most people just froth at the mouth trying to get them and then just stick them in the bank after using them once or twice.

You know what I wish would make a comeback? Isometric 16/32-bit sprite-based JRPGs. Alas, they were never that popular even when they were popular, and even less popular now.
All anybody wants these days is corridor shooter/ FPS games or the 50th iteration of Mario/Zelda/Pokemon :/

I think of it like my dark purple Yoroi fettish in AC, before they came out with dyes. I spent ALL my time trading to finally get my full set. I seriously spent at least a year working up to it.

Not sure if I know what you mean. Are you talking about jrpgs like secret of mana, earthbound, chrono trigger, and the old final fantasy games?

Yes, RPG's in general during the 16 bit and 32 bit era were heavily influenced by Final Fantasy and other Jrpg's.
Somewhere around the 64/ 128 bit era developers started moving away from 2d isometric sprite-based graphics and more towards 3D.
America companies never liked the japanese way, all their RPG's are usually going to be 3D. To me the difference between the american idea of an RPG and the japanese idea of an RPG is like the difference between Oblivion and Final Fantasy.
