I just found melon seeds, then actually found my way back to where I got into the mine.
Now to plant the seeds somewhere I guess.

Got some too and finally dug my way to the surface. Time to make a bit of a base so I can get back to exploring. Hit my first bug. Closed the workbench without removing the materials (was making torches). They dropped like normal and I picked them up but the icons remained on the ground. In my inventory I saw a single coal and a single stick that I couldn't move. If I put something over them I would pick them up but they would just relocate... not really there. Logging didn't help.

I was going to dig an underground spot to try them. Dug two blocks and ran into a cave. 64 torches later I went back, still tons unexplored. =/

Haven't found a village yet but when I went looking I followed a river, found the edge of a mountainous biome (amazing) some rolling hills biome, and then almost fell in a ravine. I managed to find my way back to my grassy plain on the edge of swamp and desert.
The new biomes seem to be big enough. So awesome.
But screw spiders. They suck, and now they're smaller, grinder designs will need to be modifed. Though I can already know how to do a spider separator I think.

Yeah caves a monsters compared to what they were. A lot more random than the tunnels of the old generator.
