You have to actually fly out to the cat instances if you want to do those.
If you want rep in any of the new factions you have to get at least friendly to get the tabard.
Some crafting recipies you need rep for.
Other then that there is no reason to quest unless you enjoy it.

Did half of Vash, 1/4 hyjal, and enough in the other zones to open all the portals. All the rest was Arch and DF.

One of my guildmates is leveling her character via mining and the occasional mob around the nodes. Shes currently at 83.

My warrior is 85 now and hardly quested at all. I did some dailies (cooking / fishing), a lot of RDF, and mining and PvP. It was a nice change of pace for leveling, almost like old school MMOs but not in that grind your face off and die inside kind of way (the no themepark progression way). Now it sucks being out of phase with everything yea.

Yeah, I am thinking I may just have to suck it up and do it. On the other hand, my mage is up to 75 now, so I have another one that is knocking on the door. So I may just experiment with the lock and see how damaging it really is so I know whether I have to suck it up and do it on my mage as well. You wouldn't get the seahorse mount, but if you aren't doing the quests there.... is it really that big of a deal?
I REALLY HATE FORCED QUESTING. Actually.... I hate questing altogether.
If you're talking about the whole 'led around by the nose' bit...tough as it is and can be to swallow, I feel they are really trying to push the 'story' I think they want people to focus on that. We have two years of patching coming..it has to be for something.

I found something else by accident.
It has become my new passion.

And having a story is great (for many people) the first time thru. But for every alt the story just isn't good enough to re-read every few days/weeks/months depending on your personal leveling speed.

Questing nets rep, which could be gained from running instances later, but the problem is that half the zones change when you quest in them now, due to the overuse of phasing. You kind of have to "unlock" each zone by questing through it.
Look how Hyjal changes after you've finished the story arc.

I want to level my warlock to 85, but the thought of going through the beginning quests again up until Deepholme for a fourth time makes me want to stab myself in the eye. Is anyone else leveling almost exclusively through DF and BGs? I wouldn't have the portals opened in SW and there would be some phasing issues from skipping quests, but would I be at a permanent disadvantage because of this? I can't think of any reason that you couldn't just skip it all and still be fine.
If I didn't enjoy a game, I couldn't imagine just sitting there grinding away just to hit the level cap and grind some more. You need a new hobby you enjoy.

I don't remember saying I didn't like the game? I don't like questing. I like dungeons and BGs. I don't get to play as much as I would like, so when I do- I want to kill things. I want action. I do not want to run virtual errands for NPCs. And I CERTAINLY don't want to feel like I HAVE to run virtual errands for pixel-people. My question was: if I skip the parts I don't like and only do what I find fun- how screwed am I? And thanks for all the responses.
Sounds like I will have to do at least as much as necessary to unlock the portals for phasing reasons. Thanks Elmador, that was what I was looking for.
And to Indrid's point, I could not possibly care less about the story. I know most people dig it and read the lore and whatnot, but I am just here to kill things. Honestly, I have been playing this game for years and I have no clue how any of the characters are related to each other. It's not my thing, so that's just one more reason I hate that I am forced into questing to move along a story that I don't care about anyway.
