I say give RIFT a shot. Its familiar enough to to jump right in, but different enough to keep you entertained for some time I think.

You just gotta try Rift for yourself I know I'm glad I didn't listen to all the people who said its just a WoW clone I'm having a blast now in rift while they're waiting to play more of the "revamped" blizzard content.

Negative. I did not think it was "different enough".

Dont worry I will give my opinion anyways.
The PvP MMO is NOT a "niche" market, Mythic is just a "niche" company.

I would add that, if you look at who's saying what about Rift, you might notice it's the more hardcore raider types who are the ones saying Rift is just a WoW clone. The people who have had more of a PvP slant/background on the VNs, it seems to me anyway, are the ones who are more saying Rift is a blast. So your enjoyment of Rift could somewhat depend on what you find fun in MMOs to begin with.

As lame as it might sound go to Wikipedia and look for a list of MMOs. Then choose one that looks or feels right. Generally the Wikipedia site will have a link to the games actual website.

I am in much the same position as you are Siujoey, and if it wasn't for the fact that I do not want to lug around two laptops when I travel I would be playing Rift. But since my work laptop is this craptastic Acer, I am stuck playing either WoW or sudoku puzzles (both at the lowest graphics setting) until I find myself home.

Hilarious. I currently DO lug around 2 laptops when I travel. Only difference is my work laptop is at least a Dell. :-)

If i chuck this one into a puddle, I will end up with a Dell but it will be only slightly better I am almost willing to volunteer my personal one for work useage (and the subsequent monitoring . . . ).

I'd have to disagree with your generalization. As a PvP-centric player, I am not at all enthusiastic about Rift. It's absolutely a WoW clone...I see no difference between Rift and a vanilla WoW PvP server. The devs have put about the same amount of thought and effort into PvP as Blizzard did (not much, in other words), while they're putting a ton of effort into PvE instances and planning for raiding systems.

World PvP is exactly as it is on a WoW PvP server -- if you look for it, you can find it. But the game obviously wasn't built with world PvP in mind. There are no systems in place to actively support it. There has been very little communication from the devs about PvP plans, but they've certainly put a lot of effort into their PvE dungeons and talking about PvE plans.

If you were a PvE player who was tired of WoW itself but liked the WoW style of gameplay, Rift would be great.

If you were a gamer whose only experience of PvP was 'honor grinding' in instanced battlegrounds in WoW and IF you actually liked that, Rift would work out for you.

But I'd never recommend Rift to a player looking for a good PvP game.
