I haven't felt the desire to log in for 2 weeks. I hoped Cata would entertain me for longer, but I just don't have the time for it any more. I am hoping I can get some more ideas here. I am starting to feel the itch to play Rift, although DC Universe was another one that sounded fun. (In concept)
- I can usually only play for an hour or two at a time.
- Raids suck, I cannot hold to scheduled play times.
- PvP that is much worse than WoW would be a deal breaker.
- I hate the science fiction/space genre. And will never play another Star Wars game after that steaming pile called Galaxies.
- I much prefer games that are solo friendly due to limited and erratic play times.
- Anything with a loot system similar to Asheron's Call might be enough in itself to get me there. (But I don't think there are any of those out there.)
I am almost ready to start a mage/warlock/chloromancer in Rift. (I think I can do that combo) But I haven't heard anything really about DC Universe or anything else out there now. I also heard Shadowbane was coming back, but click to move was terrible. So... any ideas?

Have you read much about what people are saying about Rift, because it seems like a few of your bullet points match up nicely with what people have been praising about Rift. I recommend giving it a try, but I'm really enjoying what Rift has to offer myself. It's not Sci-fi, the PvP is enjoyable, and it's easy to solo or jump in and out of groups - also the flexibility in the soul system gives players a lot of room to build what they want to play (imo). It's easy enough to jump in and out of game - I've had my playtime broken up into tinier blocks lately, but it's been a snap to jump in game, get a few quests done, close a couple rifts, or stop an invasion, afk a bit, and then jump back in.

Don't waste your money on Rift - it's more of the same crap.
Wait a few months.

Is there something coming out in the next few months? That's my problem, I guess. I have not heard of anything coming out in the near future that even sounds good. I was waiting for DCUO, but haven't heard much about it.
I saw Champions Online went F2P, but I think it is just because it is a less robust version of DCUO and COH. The only reason I have been itching to try Rift is just what was stated above, it seems like it would fit. I just don't know what the endgame is like. The WoW endgame is frustrating because I can never do raids. It isn't that big of a deal, because I tend to prefer PvP anyway. But it still annoys me when the whole point in WoW (arguably) is to gear up for/in raids. The problem is raids are longer events than I have time for and generally require a commitment a week in advance.
The only other game I thought sounded interesting is GW2, but haven't read anything at all about that one yet....

Check out some free to play stuff before you drop money on Rift. Have you played LOTRO and EQ2? Even Allods - and I know it's the whipping boy of the internets - is worth a look (note: suggestions based on the assumption that you want something similar to WoW but new to you, since you're considering Rift).

I did play LotRO a while back, but I hated it pretty quickly. I am positive I don't have time for EQ2 though, I have heard it is really not worth it unless you plan on investing a lot of time in it. I have never even heard of Allods though.
Not looking for anything similar to WoW per se, just something fun. Rift just seems to be the biggest and most well received recently.

Aye, Stormie has good advice here - LOTRO is an excellent a cheap suggestion. You can register and play for free until level 20+. Give it a try, roll a few different classes and races.
Now if you want to try Rift, go for it - I'm culprit of it myself - but don't tell us we didn't warn you

I am in much the same position as you are Siujoey, and if it wasn't for the fact that I do not want to lug around two laptops when I travel I would be playing Rift. But since my work laptop is this craptastic Acer, I am stuck playing either WoW or sudoku puzzles (both at the lowest graphics setting) until I find myself home.

Hilarious. I currently DO lug around 2 laptops when I travel. Only difference is my work laptop is at least a Dell. :-)

I have never even heard of Allods though.
It's at http://allods.gpotato.com/
Free-to-play, pretty standard race/class/level/two-faction fantasy MMO, not a million miles away from WoW. When I checked out Rift, I actually thought its setting reminded me of Allods, with the two factions being a sort of high fantasy faction, and a more magi-tech sort of group.
It was extremely well-received during beta - again, the enthusiasm around Rift reminds me a lot of the enthusiasm around Allods. But when it launched properly, the pricing of certain cash shop items caused an enormous backlash. I'm stretching my memory a little here but it was something around an extremely expensive item to mitigate death penalties, which seemed to make endgame PvP or raiding difficult or impossible unless you spent a lot of money.
Anyway, the public support in the forums and blogs evaporated, and to be honest, I've hardly heard of the game since. But it was certainly slick, and I'm sure it's even slicker now with some development behind it. Probably worth a look, since it's free, if you're in the mood to try out a game or two and see if they entertain.
