AC1 is still my favorite of all time. The excitement I felt when I thought about getting done with work and school and logging on was amazing. Have never felt anything like it again.
I got just a bit of that feeling when I played Rift Beta and was able to immerse myself into 3 different Soul trees. This was the first game that had that kind of flexibility since AC1 and it reminded me of that.

So I have been back for about 2 weeks.
And I can safely say that every single class is not as fun to play as it used to be. I am saddened. I doubt I will last a month. The game just isn't as enjoyable as it used to be.

Yeah I tried to PvP last week. I was bored.
I log into RIFT, make an Assassin that plays a guitar while you are stunned, play the exact same battlegrounds (cause RIFT copied WoW) and I'm having a blast. My character and building him is very important to me. Take that away, and I'm having a lot less fun.

Yup I called it quits 3 weeks after release of Cataclysm.
They ruined the classes, degraded the detail of gear & weapons.
The Dungeons got crazy as well as the requirements for them.
Unless you're a Healer or Tank the wait for dungeons is an hour or more.
Even the wait on the Battlegrounds is over 30min.
I totally agree with all of this. Cataclysm is the worst thing that happened to WoW.
I now return to the most fun filled game I've ever played. No waiting. Plenty of action.
Dark Age of Camelot
No other game will give you;
3 realms (3 different sides)
14 crafting professions (7 being sub-class)
18 different races (excluding the minotaur)
44 different classes (excluding the mauler)
Able to template your character to fit your needs.
True battlegrounds (not WoW & WaR Instances)
True endgame RvR with frontiers. (not WaR Tiers)
Great game, but gets no love. I may check out RIFT after all.

DAoC was great for me because it was one of the very few times. I actually saw people cooperating in the battlegrounds. It was nothing to have scouting parties actually scouting and luring the enemy out. Then back door them with the main force with a flank move. Its pure joy to flank the enemy when they dont see you, and have your CC'ers mezz everything that moves. Nothing but ZZZZZZZZ's all over the place. Having 3 factions made for some insane battles. My only problem is once ToA hit, the emphasis shifted from protecting the realm, to leveling artifacts and running trials. I do remember one name specifically Gunnar. Dude was a beast.

DAoC had a lot of flaws, most notably the terrible PvE and leveling system. That stuff would not even come close to flying in today's world of MMOs. But the RvR system is by FAR the most fun I've had in any MMO, hell any game I've ever played. Even when classes were unbalanced, the scale of the fight and the community that grew around it were amazing. Part of the problem WoW has, even as I continue to play, is that the community on each server is just crap. It's fractured by the instancing of content. As nice as that is for PvE and raids, it is terrible for PvP. World PvP, the only thing that has the possibility of being as fluid and dynamic as DAOC's RvR, is all but pointless when the rewards for evenly fought, rehashed BGs is much higher. There are bragging rights to be had, but when those bragging rights are wrapped around the core mechanics of the PvP system, they become all the more important.
WoW is a much better game in many, many ways. But at the core, the PvP is more about honor and getting the next piece of gear than actually winning battles for your faction.
DAoC was my first MMO and I'll always be nostalgic for how much fun it was. It created my love for PvP and fighting against someone that was actually thinking and trying to use their skills to beat me. But there's no reason a new game can't be more fun. WoW has gotten a ton of things right and is a great game that has pioneered more things than you can count... But it's PvP is rarely thrilling and epic. Just another grind.

Anarchy Online best ever, until the 200-220 expansion. Rift quite a good mix of AION,WoW, Warhammer and EQ2 Id say.

Since we are discussing nostaliga for MMO games of old, I will just mention that this name Riktor was the name of the original character I created when trying EQ a few months or so after it launched. Although I have many fond memories of EQ it's not for the gameplay, it's for the (at the time) unique fantasy world and espcially the people and the laughs we had playing it.
My 1st game however was Ultima Online. Some friends got me into UO fairly soon after it launched and although it was my first major online game of any kind really and was extremely interesting, it quickly soured on me. I played the original Ultima games, even the ones that appeared as poorer translations on the original NES system (yeah, I am getting old) so I had great expectations. As I recall my 1st character in there picked up a pickaxe, did some mining thinking I would make some armor and a weapon and go explore. Entering my 1st town Trinsic, somewhat ironically known as the city of honor, I think I went 5 ft before I saw some message saying SoandSojerkoff removes items from you. A guy following me was pickpocketing me. When I turned around and opened my backpack suddenly a bomb like item appeared in my bag. Yeah, you could actually put things in people's inventory without any consent. This bomb blew up, killing me instantly and hitting the crowd around me in its radius which flagged me immediately as the worst possible villain, Major Dastardly Ahole or whatever it was called and basically made me Killed on Sight by the guards. So as a ghost I got to watch random passersby looting my body of the random stuff I had accumulated thus far.
It's a wonder I ever played another MMORPG at all.
