AC gets my vote for that.

It also had the best skill/level/loot systems. None of which are in use today in any way, sadly.

Nothing at all. It was actually a pretty terrible game, but there was no competition at the time, and for many people it was their first. They remember it fondly despite the incredible amount of bad game mechanics and terrible design failings.

Oh, and people who enjoyed having others forced to play with them sitting in one place for days on end killing the same monster to gain xp loved it too, so there's that.

^^ This. People remember it fondly because it was the first for them. But it tends to get over hyped now from old timers compared to the reality of what it really was.

Meh. It was great fun at the time. Not but a very tiny few folks saying the engine feels anything but clunky and dated after playing WoW. And say what you will, when was the last time you saw a PVP raid in WoW with 150+ people? Yeah. Funny how technology has "improved," eh?

AC was an amazing game. When I found AC, I was looking for a graphical MUD. AC delivered!

It is just so dated now and devoid of people. If we had populations like we did back in the hay day, I would still be playing. I can't play a MMO that isn't the least bit massive anymore, though.

The only (but quite big) flaw of UO is the now very old graphics.
Otherwise, in my opinion, it beats any other game released since then, including AC1, and I've played AC1 for over 5 years.
UO just couldn't keep me immersed with the crappy isometric "2D and half" after playing AC1 in full 3D with the HUGE view distance it had.

If there was a game like AC1 with even a half-arsed attempt at updating to modern times and a decent population (and wasn't a bug filled messed) I would be all over it like a fat kid on a cake.

Nothing! There are a lot of ex DAoC players on this board and they have a great deal of nostalgia for DAoC. It is the same phenomenon as the WoW players who pine away for the 1-60 days of WoW. They have conviently forgotten the negative aspects of DAoC.

I don't think people forgot all of Camelot's flaws - it's that despite those flaws, it captured people for a long time and they fondly remember all the fun they had. Even though I play WoW now, when it comes to PVP there's no comparison between the times I had in Camelot to WoW.
