I would agree, except AC blows this notion slam out of the water, as reward/content was available to all and was everywhere, and the community was one of the best ever seen in an MMO...
Competing against players for a trickle of rewards once a week is what makes WOW's community what it is. That, and not having to recover a corpse. (recovering bodies was one thing everyone helped with in AC, because everyone knew what it meant to lose a body) There were strong bonds formed when someone spent an hour or more helping you recover from some 300-dot-on-the-radar hellhole, risking their own items as well, and when that person sent you a message asking for help with a recovery, you dropped what you were doing and went, no questions asked...
WOW has....loot drama?
There is no comparison.
The community reflects the structure of the game, and WOW and its "me me me" community are a perfect fit for each other...and that has nothing to do with access to content in Wrath vs any other expansion. If anything, Wrath was a TINY step in the right direction for a flourishing, decent community.
Summary:
AC: Access to all content for everyone. Access to any gear for everyone. Result: Best community to date.
WOW: opposite in every way.
Imagine that.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean here, but I see the (further) decline of the playerbase directly linked to their entitlement which is a product of the content and how it was "delivered" and the accessibility to it. I do not see these issues as separate.
For the record and not necessarily germane to this post, and you will agree if you remember my posts, I have always maintained from very near the beginning of this game that imo, the worst "feature" of the game was the (lack of) "community".
The way I see it: easier access to content/reward = more entitled playerbase = more screaming for easier content = repeat the cycle ad nauseum.

There are a couple things about this post.
For starters, AC population and WoW population aren't really comparable. You know where I'm going with that so I won't harp on it but success as a measure of population and income is not comparable between the games.
That said though, yes AC was around at a different time than WoW and had a different (not just smaller) playerbase. The playerbase of AC probably enjoyed the challenges of AC that weren't gear related. WoW's challenges are ALL gear related. Further, the "old school" MMO mentality is present in the community of games like AC and DAOC too. Both of those player base populations were so different as to make comparison to WoW very difficult to do.
Again, I see your point and agree with it, but want to emphasize that WoW's challenge is all about obtaining gear. If you water that challenge down, there's not much left and the whole "entitlement" mentality rears its ugly head. Combine that with the larger player base and the huge portion of wow's playerbase that are "instant gratification NAO!" types vs. the somewhat different mentality of MMO players in years prior and the comparisons fall apart further.
