What a waste...

I tried the free to play. Yes, I gave in and I did. And of course, it was as bad as I expected.

1) It's still Funcom programming. Took me 3 tries to get past the patcher into the game without crashing. The 2 first times, the game crashed, and then the patcher downloaded new data. The third time, no download and it worked. Those devs aren't even able to program a patcher properly...

2) One of my characters has now an utterly retarded name full of numbers. Something like "Korrigan397564999" (not the real name, only an example). Now that's a warm welcome back. And of course, no option to change the name.

3) The character is in an inn, so I go out into Tarantia... only to be stuck on the loading screen for half an hour. I ended killing the task.

My computer runs all modern games and MMORPGs without problems. Like someone said, being free doesn't make this less a crap game. Age of Conan was crap in 2008 when released, and is still crap today.

What a waste of a fabulous franchise...

Did someone in this thread say AoC is now less bugged than WoW? Well, I can now confidently call you a liar.

That small group of words right there invalidates everything you said after it.

Except that anyone can read their forums and see that you alone are pretty much the only person having that issue. Completely unbuggy for me and everyone I met in game when I tried it. On the odd chance that you are telling the truth and not just throwing blind stones... then I apologize.

100% truth. It happened exactly like I said, including the retarded character name.

And fun part is, first thing I've read in general chat once I finally was in is people having technical problems with the game. Another guy was notably talking about exactly the same issues than me with the patcher.

Funcom programming. Crap.

And this is a person who loved and still defends many of the features of Anarchy Online. But stability and bug free code has never been one of the qualities of Funcom.

hrm..

Well don't know what to tell ya as I tried it pre-free to play, so obviously did all my initial install/patching prior. I have literally never seen the issues you mention in the tech forum there. I'm not saying it is your machine, but outside of server lag from all the free to players hitting the starter zone (they did not open new PvE servers) it was very smooth. All I am saying is that what you detail is apparently very rare... and only bothered replying because of the liar comment.

FYI: The name thing. That happened when they merged servers, and it should prompt you to select a new name as soon as you try to log in with it. Have not heard previously of people not being able to change their name, in fact I am fairly certain that you cannot log in while numbers exist in your character's name.

Big picture, I've only had time for AoC maybe an average of 2 hours each week the past 2 and probably going to drop it as I still need to finish a buttload of console games. So let's avoid any debates that make me seem like a fanboi for a game I am not playing any longer k?

So what we have here is a typical PEBKAC problem, being blamed on the software.

No surprise.

I'm sorry Korrigan, but I haven't had a single issue. No patching issues, no loading issues, no freezing issues. The game itself runs just fine.

Beyond that I find it to be kinda generic and pretty much the same as it was before. It is technically solid though.

I will validate the name thing. My character was Rezzinu982922215 and no option to change the name. Was told in-game to contact a GM. But that is the only bug I ran into.

Hey how come nobody is mentioning that City of Hero's also went free to play.
