That's true, in a sense, but you have to really consider the word new. They wanted a younger, different take because they couldn't make money off the old franchise. But if they wanted to truly do something new, they would have just done something completely original. That's not to say they'll definitely use Khan, because Khan is not Darth Vader level iconic, but he is a name people recognize, and even people who haven't seen it know the film Wrath of Khan. So, just like the Enterprise crew, instead of doing something truly "new" they'll do something different with an old name.

Exactly. If they use Khan, I would expect it to be something completely different from the original Space Seed episode or The Wrath of Khan. Khan is a great character and almost archetypal to the concepts of power and vengeance. I don't think that bringing him back would take away from the reboot. After all, nobody believed that a Star Trek reboot could be pulled off in a way that was enjoyable and at least marginally acceptable to canon, but they did.

Well if the time line has shifted so much then odds are the Enterprise won't run into the SS Botany Bay... maybe someone else will... someone Khan can dominate. So instead of dumping them on some planet and him building up all that angst you have a genetically engineered soldier and brutal dictator with an army of 70 or so foot soldiers.
So say a Klingon Cruiser finds the Botany Bay and wakes them up. Treating them like normal humans, or like strangers if the races haven't met yet, then being surprised when they take over. The Klingon empire is based on strength so Khan could easily dominate the crew making them his. From there he picks up a couple more ships and starts to build his empire. To start it would have to be based mostly on piracy to build his numbers so eventually he pisses off the Federation and they send the Enterprise to deal with it. Or he captures a Federation outpost and makes it his which would have the same effect.
I think it would fit their more action oriented reimaging of the franchise but at the same time keep the interest of the people who grew up with it. Hell I grew up with it and would love to see more movies or even a series come back.

I'm actually kind of depressed right now, I realized last night that the STar Trek phenom was slightly broken for this generation of kids/tweens. My 14 yr old had no idea what the Borg was (were?!). They need a new series for this generation like the past few gen's, the world needs more trekkies and some punked out and emo ones would be a kick!
Until then, mmmm another movie. It'll have to do for now I suppose.

After enjoying the first movie and the cast choices they made I would love to see a new generation of Star Trek shows too. A new time line, fresh characters and using today's technology for the effects... oh yeah.

a long time back, before Star Trek came out, I could have swore I heard people discussing that if the movie did well they wanted to take the cast into a new TV Series, whatever happened with that? Did the actors get too big now to do it as a series and are just sticking with the movies or what?

That's a good point. But also, I think there are just too many examples of movies being seen as a step up from television, and conversely television being a step down, to think that they'd abandon a blockbuster movies series to make it television. I think, more likely, that if it had been a moderate hit, one where dumping 150 million into another Summer film didn't seem a very profitable notion, they might have tried shifting it to television.
However you can bet that as soon as the reboot was a hit they started talking about a different tv series. I have no idea if any are in the works but I would guess if the sequel is a hit there'd be no doubt some new Star Trek will be on TV in the near future.

It would be cool, but yeah as pointed out, Spock is already Syler.
