Glad to hear it. I bought a G110 and I'm pretty happy with it (backlight could be a bit brighter though).

I set up a macro to switch between default sound devices and just leave my headset plugged in 100% of the time, and its pretty convenient to have those jacks on the keyboard.

You can adjust the brightness the same time you pick your color in the profiler by clicking on the color part of the M1, M2, M3 buttons and selecting custom. Higher in the color picker box is brighter. Of course this limits your color choices since the darker colors won't be as bright. I can't see needing brighter than that but maybe you do and already know this.

Yeah, the backlight brightness is disappointing (even with the brightest colors). Wish it was brighter too.

I always have a problem ruining my gaming keyboards. Seem to always spill some beverage on them and no matter how I try to save them a week or 2 later a key or two will stop working.

I have tried:

Saitek Eclipse II with the plugin macro 'keyboard'. Really liked that one, worked well, looked nice, overall was nice.

Saitek Cyborg. Liked it but only got to use it for a couple weeks before I dumped a glass of water on it and had to go back to my Eclipse II, which I eventually dumped pop on and replaced with a.....

Razor Lycosa. Hated this thing. Actually I really liked it but apparently some of the models of it have keys which will randomly stop working and you have to unplug and replug it. Luckily I ended it the same way as the others.

I think I need a larger desk or stopping drinking things when I'm on my computer . Never have this problem on my work computers.

Saitek Eclipse I was the one with the plugin game pad. I had that for a short while, something happened to it though, forgot what.

Then I went to the Saitek Eclipse II. Used two of these keyboards for about 6 years I think. They both worked great and felt nice to type on, no game pad though, but much better looking with 3 different back light colors available.

I bought a Logitech G15 at one point, but that was right before my house fire. Only had it a month I think and the keys got all melted. Ended up going back to an Eclipse after that. G15 was nice, but I didn't really use the LCD and it was too wide, I didn't need all those macro keys because I used a Nostromo too.

And then we fast forward to now. I've retired the second Eclipse II. I used a Logitech G110 briefly, but it's already been retired after only a week.

G110 seems like a nice keyboard, but after spending so much time on keyboard forums, I was convinced to give mechanical keyboards a try. Initially I was just going to stick with the G110 because of all the extras light back lighting, USB ports, macroing, and all for just $60.

But then I got weak and ordered a mechanical keyboard. A Thermaltake Meka G1. Primary purpose for picking this one was because of the built in wrist rest, I've become very used to my keyboards having this and very few mechanical keyboards include it. This keyboard uses Cherry Black switches which are ideal for gaming, but don't have tactile feedback like the Blue or Brown switches, and are a bit stiffer, so not quite as ideal for just typing.

However I have a second mechanical keyboard on they way. The Thermaltake is nice, but the keys are just a bit too stiff for typing, I can feel my fingers getting tired typing on this too long. Everyone kept saying to get a Filco and the Brown switches seemed to be really popular. I didn't get it at first because it doesn't have a wrist rest, but folks also say that's probably a bad habit I need to break anyway. And I can just buy a wrist rest.

My accountant (good friend forever) is really particular about his keyboards. It is a mechanical model made way back when. He trawls eBay and the like for it and whenever he finds one he snaps it up and always has a couple of them tucked away. I'm not too particular though I do like the feel of a good mechanical keyboard. I guess that is from working with all kinds of keyboards in all kinds of conditions and usually not having a choice in which I use. For at home I end up with a nice general purpose keyboard that has macro keys... typically a Logitech of some flavor.

Might be the IBM Model M keyboards. I hear people love those keyboards and snag them up on eBay. I had piles of them as a kid (my father love collecting computer crap). Wish I knew then that they'd be worth up to $100 on eBay years later.

Yeah that sounds about right. He gets them where/when he can and squirrels them away as spares, lol.

Curiosity got me to try out a couple of mechanical keyboards, the $100 Thermaltake Meka G1 and the $140 Filco Majestictouch 2.

Was a bit of peer pressure from the folks on HardOCP, Overclockers.net and Geekhack. If you dare mention a membrane style gaming keyboard like the Logitech G110 the thread usually gets dog piled by people preaching the glories of the mechanical keyboard and trying to convert the blasphemous demons for thinking about buying a regular (membrane) keyboard. I drank the Kool-Aid.

Bought two mechanical keyboards. The Thermaltake was my first choice because I really wanted a keyboard with an attached wrist rest and it seemed to get good reviews. And I liked the feel of it, but it uses black switches which are stiffer and I did find it tiring to type on too long. It's great for gaming, not quite ideal for lots of typing for me. So I tried the Filco next, it has brown switches which press down easier, more comfortable to type on for long periods. Sadly it was quite expensive and didn't have an attached wrist rest or media keys or really any extras.

I enjoyed the feel of the keys on the mechanical keyboards. But I really missed all the extras that regular gaming keyboards provide such as dedicated media keys, back lighting, usb hub, wrist rest, and lots of choices. Some mechanical keyboards have some extras, but it doesn't seem any mechanical keyboard really had everything I wanted.

So I am sticking with my $60 Logitech G110 I bought recently.

With some luck maybe mechanical keyboards will gain a bit more popularity here in the US (guess they are already popular in Asia). After all Razer has made a mechanical keyboard recently so maybe Logitech and others will consider jumping in with gaming oriented mechanical keyboards. And I did consider the Razer Black Widow, like other Razer keyboards it seemed to be dogged with lots of quality complaints, so I passed on that.

This entire post written on a Logitech G110.
