Complete disaster.

I ended up getting the Asus RT-N16 router from Newegg. Got it flashed with tomato and configured all my PC's, Roku, and WDTV, then two days later dead router.

I'm not too happy with Newegg either, they charged $13.35 restocking fee plus $13.13 for return shipping. I used to sometimes pay a little more because of their reputation, but no more.

So it just seems like you returned it instead of contacting the manufacturer for warranty support?

Yes, from the reviews, many had troubles a few months later as late as a year. I didn't have a good feeling after taking it out of the box, it seemed a little cheap compared to the Linksys.

why would you pay a restocking fee or return shipping for an item that is broken? Any problem I've ever had...I call and ask for an rma...and they handle it with no problem.

I've had newegg waive restocking fees just by asking.

You should complain to the BBB about this bullshit.

I did contact Newegg and they graciously waived the restocking fee. They explained their system automatically adds the restocking fee unless you call, email or chat with them online.

I have done business with them for over 10 years and its probably been eight years since I ever had to return anything.

I guess I jumped the gun a little and my confidence is restored in Newegg

This. Always call. Always. They don't usually return CPU's after they've been opened, but I called them and had no issue returning it (wrong chipset ordered)
NO restocking fee, No hassles.

Oh and as for the ASUS, sorry mate, but you'll always have a chance to get a lemon, regardless of the purchase.

Yeah, it was my fault I jumped the gun a little on the return problem.

By reading the reviews on Newegg and Amazon it seems like there are a lot of lemons, not just Asus but any brand. If the modems aren't outright dying, they are plagued with random disconnects, poor range, overheating, etc. regardless price range.
