Look, I know this will come as a surprise and shock 'n' all, but Star Trek isn't exactly an educational series on modern physics and science.
Star Trek always tried to stay grounded on science. They go to great lengths to explain a lot of things and when they throw around terms they are typically grounded in reality. That is why it is science fiction and not science fantasy.
Not to say it is all perfect and hard science, but this film is the farthest departure Star Trek has ever made from modern physics and science.
