They're planning on closing down their service and replacing it with Anti-SOPA text telling people if they like the services back, they ought to contact their represantives about SOPA.

SOPA really is overdoing it, it's like fighting shoplifters by torching the shops.

SOPA is one of the few measures I've written my congresspeople about. Ridiculous law.

And I've logged a couple entries on blogs/sites saying I am against it. Under my actual name.

PS: I am against it. If you couldn't tell.

If SOPA goes through, all of those services would have to close down for good

I wonder if the Outpost would be shut down because we repost copyrighted articles here all the time.

The bill quite literally makes host responsible for all content processed through their websites. So f.ex. Google could be sued for any illegal content that gets through their filters on search engine.

Testes is full of shit. It would hurt them (obviously, that's why they're up at arms about it), but it wouldn't kill them.

I'm not a fan of legislation specifically intended to bolster IP at the expense of individual freedom, but a lot of the potential risks are being blown out of proportion by these same companies that would have to report directly to the federal government under SOPA.

EDIT: "The bill quite literally makes host responsible for all content processed through their websites. So f.ex. Google could be sued for any illegal content that gets through their filters on search engine."

What would they be sued for, and who would be doing the suing?

The end user is still held responsible for pirated content. It's up to Google to remove such links as they're discovered. What's insane about this bill is that both Google and the Federal Government would need entire new departments just to maintain these updates. Managing a proxy server with web filtering for a large organization is a full-time job. I can't even imagine how many people it would take to proxy/filter the entire Internet.
