Have you ever owned one? Or been around one much?

My man brought one home yesterday because the family was going to take it to the pound. It is a purebred male..with papers and stunningly beautiful.

I know nothing about these dogs..he took up with me right away, so I guess he is nice..lol.

It belonged to one of his fellow workers mom..who died, and they can't keep it because they live in an apartment.

He slept in the snow last night and seemed to be happy. sigh..i wish he would have asked me first..but he said it was going to the dog pound that day.

What can any of you tell me about these dogs?

They are curious, intelligent and full of personality.

They are work dogs (they do best when they have a job) and require TONS of exercise.

Because of their large size and demeanor, obedience\good citzenship training is a MUST. It needs to happen every day.

Escape artists that get bored easily. Make sure they are not left off leash and that their area is secure.

They don't do well in the heat and warm weather. Get the lil guy a wading pool for spring and summer so he can cool himself off.

Essentially, like most large work dogs, they can be a whole lot of trouble if you don't give them a consistent schedule, lots of exercise and discipline. If cared for properly, they are wonderful family pets that will give you many years of joy.

they need a lot of exercise and aren't the type of dog you can expect to stay inside or on a leash. they need to run.

Huskes are athletic outdoorsy dogs, build him fenced area in the shade for him or better yet, get him a running wire. Huskies need lot of exercise and they get really uncomfortable indoors because of their fur.

Unless you're planning on using it for breeding, get it fixed....otherwise you'll have to get used to being nipped at.

They need to run, but absolutely can't be trusted off leash. If they are going to be let off leash, it needs to be in an area where they ultimately can't get away.

I had one when I was younger. He LOVED, and I do mean LOVED, to run. If you don't have a big area for him to exercise in I'd say find him a good home. I had a fairly decent sized back yard and he still escaped from it too many times. (Escape artist is right) It ultimately led to his demise. I thought, at the time, that a chain link fence would be enough to keep him in. I was wrong. He jumped the fence one day (with me watching) and was hit by a car. Love them though I do (second only to the Basset Hound breed I have now), I don't think I would have another now unless I had an area where that could not possibly happen again.

One fond memory I have of him was one snow day, kids were out playing on the hill behind the house...they would trudge up and down the hill with their sleds. Until I hooked up Bowie to a sled and let him pull them around and back up the hill. Lord you should have seen that dog. He was in his element then and the kids loved it too. That was a fun day. He was a "silver" husky and have silver instead of the normal black and white. He was the most gorgeous dog I'd ever seen and still is, to this day.

Yeah, they got same thing as with hunting dogs, let them off leash and they'll be another side of the county in few hours
