i think it really depends on what you use your phone for - i'm currently using a samsung droid charge which has a beautiful super amoled screen, which is awesome with google maps & navigation. i wish it had all the apps and games that iOS does, and also wish it has the iPhone's battery life, but it's not what i primarily use the phone for.

right now i'm using simple and clean 2.4.3 and siyahkernel and it's worked amazingly compared to what i was getting out of the box. even though batteries aren't supposed to need conditioning anymore it feels like my battery life increased quite a bit after several cycles of use. i get a day/15 hours or so easily with 'heavy' use: texting all day, some browsing, some gaming, a few calls, checking out apps and constantly just looking at my phone since i'm so in love with it. so i'll wake up at 7 and put it in the charger around 10 and my battery will be at about 25% - 50% life depending on just how much i used it. i keep GPS and wireless off until i need it and my screen is at 50% brightness unless i'm using the camera/looking at pictures, my background is solid black.
i think there are ICS roms out but i'm going to wait for the official release before i fiddle with this stuff again.
