The pipeline is a few thousand temporary jobs total (mostly low skill labor which would probably get filled by brown-skinned people anyways) and a small handful of permanent jobs. 
All jobs are temporary, and its the low skill crowd that needs some love anyhow. The highly skilled people are not the ones losing their homes.

The pipeline is a stupid idea that will do nothing to help with the oil shortage. Know why? There isn't any god damn oil shortage. The US EXPORTED more oil and oil products last year than it imported. First time in like 70 years or something. The US is poised to become the biggest exporter of natural gas in the world as well.
This pipeline isn't about securing more needed oil for the American people, it's not about reducing dependency on mid-east oil (we aren't dependent upon it now), it's not about jobs (in fact the number of jobs created by it would be less than the number of trucking and related industry jobs it would destroy)....it's about oil companies increasing profit margins by plopping a pipe full of oil right smack dab on top of the source of fresh water for millions of Americans and doing so while bypassing the required environmental impact studies because some Republican Senators got their panties in a wad about letting poor people get a tax break.

We exported finished petroleum products. We still imported oil.
Kinda like...just because you export chairs doesnt mean you arent importing wood to make those chairs.
We have lots of refining capacity in the Gulf Coast Area. We have lots of excess oil in the Northern Great Plains area and too much oil without a place to go in Cushing Oklahoma.
Because there are not enough pipeline connections, the gulf coast refineries are importing oil, even though cheaper domestic and canadian oil is out there.
The current state of things is slowing down production and exploration in the Montana, Dakota, Alberta areas...., causing higher oil prices in many parts of the country, and increasing imports.
Stopping the pipeline doesnt really do much environmentally since US consumers just switch to oil from across some ocean. There is no real environmental victory here unless you close your eyes and pretend the products coming out of gulf coast refineries appeared out of thin air by magic.

Shipping oil across the ocean doesn't possibly ruin drinking water supplies. The issue is the current proposed route runs over some key aquifers.
