thats a waste of money.
those things only read obd2 generic codes and not factory specific codes.
they are the equivelant of buying a thermometer and thinking youre a doctor.
Have you ever used one?
From the product page:
Product Page posted:
Retrieves generic and manufacturer specific Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC), includes definitions lookup software on CD and displays DTC definitions on screen
yes
ive used several brands of those "OBDII" code readers.
ive also used the $8000 diagnostic computers.
you cant get into manfucturer specific data without a key card to set the connector pins correctly.
i did this type of work with scan tools and in depth computer diagnostics in autoshops for 15 years. i watched the industry evolve from simple mechanical carbeurators to digital computer controlled fuel injection with drive by wire.
if you ever want to know anything about automotive computer systems, feel free to ask. i dont mind giving out advice.
i can also tell you that there is NO fix that will cost you under 10 bucks if it turns on a check engine light.
unless you put gas in the car while it was running and triggered an evap code, p0442(?), then youre not getting a computer repair for under 50 bucks.

Why would anyone ask your advice when you obviously don't realize pin outs can be preprogrammed and auto set depending on the manufacturing info that is static and default readable by any OBDC2 device?
Obviously you don't know as much about all aspect of automotive repair as you thought...

Thanks - I already did it. It is a P0171/P0174 with no noticeable symptoms - the car drives and idles just fine. The common diagnosis is that the MAS is either dirty or faulty. I'm shooting for dirty first. I just have to drive it a few days and see what the monitors say.
Edit: and technically the fix was about $6.50 for the MAS cleaner. I also bought an air filter which pushed the price up.

thats the system lean codes.
take a can of carb cleaner (or something flamable) and spray it around the top of yer engine.
if the cleaning the maf sensor doesnt do it.
and reese
reprogramming the pinouts would be awesome if the manufacturers shared their pinout info.
im pretty sure thats proprietary. hence the use of keys.
as well as some of the keys being solid state themselves to unlock or decode the manfacturers programs.
theres more to it that just pin locations.
yer right, though. i dont know as much about the keys as i do about using the tool and trouble shooting problems.
i never gave two shits about the keys as long as i had them and could get done what i needed to get done.
i can also guarantee that a 20 dollar code scanner does not give factory specific codes.
i own about 4 of those things. they all say they give manfacturer specific and none of them do.
they get away with it because the ignorant public who buy those things dont know the diference between factory specific and generic obd2

Sounds like a plan.
I also have read it could be a leak somewhere.

I have a 2000 Ford Taurus that had the codes P0171 & P0174, after reading these posts I checked the vacumm lines and found that the elbow on the PCV valve was split. I replaced it and the valve (total cost $3.98) and it is running fine.
If either of the mentioned plans don't fix it, I'll get to inspecting the vacuum lines.
I have until Feb 20th to get the smog crap in order.

I don't
The CEL light was on earlier, and it needed new coil packs. The guy wanted $1100 to do it.
My dad and I ended up doing it ourselves. Took about an hour and cost $200 in parts (including spark plugs).

I think sweeny is just defensive because technology is allowing ordinary people to do his job instead of paying him gobs of money to.
