I've been dealing with a car that keeps having the CEL light on and I need to get it smogged. Instead of taking it to some mechanic dork who'll charge $$ to just read the codes, I bought this:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001LHVOVK/

It ended up being a trouble code that (appears) to only take about $10 to fix it.

This saved me a good deal of money. Everyone should own one of these things. Stupid engine lights shouldn't be so "mysterious".

I've wanted one of those forever. Around here Autozone will check the light for free.

Yeah - but you might still have to wait, it's a hassle, and there might be a sales pitch.

Reading the sucker by yourself in your own driveway, with a device that cost a mere 21 bucks plus shipping, is awesome.

I have one and it not only told me I had a oxygen sensor going bad but which one it was, they also clear the check engine light so people riding with you won't think you are an idiot.

They will tell you what it is at the auto zone. Or where ever you buy automotive parts. Just had to change my thermostat last week. What a pain.

thats a waste of money.

those things only read obd2 generic codes and not factory specific codes.

they are the equivelant of buying a thermometer and thinking youre a doctor.

what was your trouble code?
ill tell you what it really means and how to go about fixing it

Have you ever used one?

Factory specific is covered - it's the very first bullet Sweeney!

My mass airflow sensor was dirty was all the problem is. It just needed cleanin'.
