One reason I'd live amongst people of various ethnic origin is they have better food, music and practicalities.

Yeah, I do miss variety in food, music and culture. Good thing that Asheville, NC is a short drive away and I tend to travel all over the place quite a bit.

Asheville, NC is a nice place.. Not a lot of variety though. Just white and black people.

That has changed a lot recently.

There has been a huge influx of Asian and Hispanic people and there are growing communities of eastern European and middle Eastern people as well. Only downside is it's getting a LOT more expensive in the area lately.

Besides, even with a mostly Black and White racial makeup, the number of subcultures within those two racial groups represented in Asheville is pretty amazing for such a small city, particularly one in this region. Every fringe group you can imagine is not only present, but often fairly well represented and accepted.

A nice city. Too bad it's also fast becoming geezerville of the east. Number one retirement relocation city in the US by some measurements. I think a lot of those people aren't aware of just how open and accepting of difference the city has been, and some are working hard (and spending a lot of money) to try and change that. They even tried to outlaw the Friday night drumming circle the hippies, burn outs, and just looking for fun hangers on have.

Place reminds me of a landlocked 1980's Key West...before development and corporate take over started to destroy it.

I lived there back in the early 90s, it was like a hippie/new age place. I have fond memories.

Totally ok too!

The building in which I live is full of working class families, mostly first or second generation immigrants. They're pretty awesome, too busy working and taking care of the family to be pains in the ass to other folks.

If you want to live around people who look like you BECAUSE they look like you you're kinda stupid and probably racist.

Most people don't really care that much about the looks, they just think looks are a proxy for shared interests and outlook. Which is also kinda dumb, but sadly there are worse proxies out there.
