Pete Hoekstra has always been a total idiot. He and his bff Rick Santorum have made plenty of culturally and racially insensitive and stupid comments over the years. While I'm sure he intended that crappy ad (that looks like it cost 18 bucks to make) to simply bash China and connect with the mouth breathers who are likely to vote for him by doing so...it was so poorly done, and so blatantly stereotypical with it's anti-Asian imagery and language...that yes, it did cross the line to racist.
Not like he cares, nor will anyone likely to vote for the dick head.

As someone who is stereotyped on a daily basis I think you are being overly sensitive, but we'll just have to disagree here.
Oh I'm not particularly incensed about it or anything. More amused that the people making the ad were such total morons. But it's just silly to say it isn't evoking asian racial stereotypes because it clearly and unabashedly is. It would be kinda like making an anti-immigration ad with a black guy supposedly from nigeria who speaks and dresses like he came from inner city detroit. Racist? Eh, maybe, maybe not. But clearly drawing on racial stereotypes.

He clearly should have dressed them all up in polar bear fur and had them sitting in igloos munching on seal fat. That way it wouldn't have been racist but everyone would still know they were Asian. Maybe.

I am 100% positive if you took a northern Italian and an Austrian your average Chinese couldn't tell the difference. I am sure the northern Italian or Austrian might see the subtle difference. An Irishman verses a Scot that your average Chinese couldn't tell the difference either. I am sure the Irishman or Scot might see the subtle difference.
If you think Chinese and Southeast Asians are alike in a way Northern Italians and Austrians are alike, you're not any less dumb than the people you're talking about. The difference between the average Chinese person and that girl is like the difference between the average Austrian and a half-Ethiopian, half-Greek.
So yes, the fact that Americans are completely clueless about a region they see themselves as the rightful rulers of says a lot.
