Yuki no doubt the commercial has bias, but I in no way see that as towards Asians in general.
The accent is awful but it is precisely in there so the sentiment is NOT aimed at asians in general.
If they wanted to do that just have her speaking with a Jersey accent, or something else as absurd. But its not.
Its a 30 second clip and half of that is the candidates speaking, so they have a very short time to convey the message they want.
But they got it all wrong. It would be like having an anti-german commercial where the people speak with a french accent and you can see Pamplona's bullfighting ring in the background.
They might not have meant it to be a racist commerical but it ended up that way because they were so ignorant and racist that they didn't know how to signifiy "Chinese" except with racist anti-Asian stereotypes.
If you really wanted it to be an anti-Chinese message have a real chinese person speaking real chinese and subtitle it.
But then no one would get it because the intended audience is too fat and stupid to read subtitles.

Could be almost anywhere in southeast asia. It very clearly doesn't look much like China, though.

Well both. But not really talking about where it was really filmed but the atmosphere it's trying to evoke. That backdrop doesn't look like China and she doesn't look Chinese.
They either tried to evoke general asian stereotypes and succeeded or tried to evoke specifically chinese stereotypes and failed miserably because they were too stupid and ignorant to know what they were doing.

I was trying to find her name and was reading some research about the whole fiasco. Apparently there is a huge Laos population in the district, pretty sure this is all going to completely backfire...

I don't think Hoekstra or his people cared enough to get all the nuances correctly. It appears all he cared about was portraying someone that is Asian as Chinese to get his point across. The people he was aiming at also don't care about the nuances just about putting a face to China even if it is the wrong face.

Which is where the racism comes from. They just wanted any old asian and any old asian-looking backdrop and any old stereotypical asian accent for her to speak in. It didn't really matter. All they were going for is asian = chinese = bad.

I think they were going for...
China = bad for America
They could have shown a map of China, but they needed to put a face to it. I think it was more ignorant than racist. Is Hoekstra a racist? Beats me I've never heard of the guy until this thread.
Is the ad a racist ad? Not in the definition of the word. Is it ignorant? Yes.
