And you are kidding yourself if you think the resistance movements didn't hide among the civilian population. All resistance movements do.

For that picture to be accurate, the Palestinian would have to be huddled into a slum holding a stick, and the Israeli would be in a billion dollar fighter jet with cruise missiles who later landed and went home to a house that used to belong to the guy with the stick.
The guy with the stick would still be almost as likely to bash the kid on his sides head in as anything else however. Which makes it pretty god damn hard to feel sorry for the idiot.

If someone shoots at me and then hides behind you, you have three options.
1) Attack and capture the shooter and I will give you a reward.
2) Get the fuck out of the way right now.
3) Stand there and act as a human shield and get shot by me when I return fire.
If you choose option 3, then that was your choice. Don't blame me.

The whole idea of human shields was ignored by everyone during World War II. Every country specifically targetted civilian populations to lower morale. In fact, most of the deaths from the war were civilians.
Most of those facts get glossed over now, but it was total war on all sides.
