SOE said the same thing back in the day and then quietly reneged on that commitment.

MMO developers will go where the cash is. The official store that sells cosmetics is one step down the road to the store that sells "win" for extra money. We will probably get there eventually.

But there's no reason to think Arenanet is more likely to go there than any other developer.

Gear helps but is not the thing you need to win in GWs. GWs requires a good understanding of various builds in various situations and against varying mobs. Also a well rounded group whether it be heroes or player characters.. GWs is much more technical than your average MMO and gear alone is not an insta IWIN..

You seem to be working off the assumption that all game developers have to be idiots.

It's not devs who makes these calls, it's management.

Game developers will do whatever they think makes them money. That's just smart business. Calling them idiots for it is pretty silly.

The best way to stop "pay to win" is to make it clear it won't make them money because people will quit in protest.

If it's fun cosmetic kind of stuff I don't mind paying for it every once in awhile to support the game since it's free anyway.

This.

I made it a point recently to spend ~$25 in the TF2 shop to buy a stack of crate keys... because I want them to keep the servers up and they can't do that if they're not making no moneez

i know the ftp + microtransactions model can work. i believe LotRO tripled its revenue when they went ftp

however, it is my understanding that they sell gear with stats

if GW2 can sustain itself by selling stuff like bag space, then more power to them. maybe they go the DDO route and release paid only content (basically more 'boxes'. but with GW2 being a PvP game, i just dont see either of those options holding up

GW1 made money off cosmetic crap + paid expansions.

GW2 will have more fixed costs because it's a real MMO but I don't see why they can't do the same thing for GW2 even considering those greater costs.

GW2 is not going to cost nearly as much as TOR did to develop so they will be able to rely on box sales to defray development costs.
