I know ALL about Jimmy Carter. I also lived through it like you. No goddamn way Carter an independent.

One thing I do notice about the country today that reminds me of back then is the same feeling ABOUT the country. Take that for what it's worth, but it doesn't bode well and I am not the only person I've talked to that feels the same.

You mean the electorate hates the country so much they are about to put an actor in the white house again?

Depends how you define independent, I guess. He routinely ignored advice from his advisers and Congressional leaders. He paid little attention to lobbyists. He was probably as independent as it is possible for a President to be.

You could argue that Ron Paul has been more independent in Congress and might well be more independent as President. I would argue that only means he would accomplish absolutely nothing.

I certainly would like to see a change in the culture in Washington. But, an independent President is useless with Congress and lobbyists and all the executive turfs that all have their own agenda and could care less about yours unless you pay attention to theirs.

not true

president has veto power, he could hold congress and the senate hostage until they comprismised, as long as he had the support of the people (thats my understanding anyways, unless there is a way around veto power.)

Congress can override a Presidential veto if they get 2/3 votes in the House and Senate.

Politicians are like diapers, they should be changed often and for the same reason.
