I had a dream. It was an incredible dream. When I awoke, I had a huge mess to clean up.

I am asking because I believe I will take a month vacation after April 15th and ride a motorcycle to Austin. and NYC if I get ambitious. This will put me in harms way in mid spring. I know avalanche survival, I can navigate out of bad riptides swimming, I know how to survive earthquakes. I have a feeling i will be vulnerable to tornadoes.
Just stick with what I said. If you have advanced warning, seek shelter indoors. Go to the central part of a building away from doors and windows. If a central bathroom or closet is available get inside one. If you have anything to cover your head and back with get under it. If a central located and/or small room is not available, go to the opposite corner of the building from where the tornado is headed to and try to get between something and the tornadoes path. Destroyed buildings show that when an F4 or smaller tornado hits a building, often it is the wall opposite of the initial impact site that is left standing and sometimes that entire section is untouched. An F5 hits and it won't matter. Should be underground for those if at all possible, but strange things happen in tornadoes and sometimes you get lucky. A house was destroyed, in one case, yet dinner was still on the table untouched and perfectly in place still.
Last bit of advice: under no circumstances should you get in a culvert pipe or go under a bridge overpass. This actually focuses the wind creates an even stronger suction pulling you out easily. A family did this in Oklahoma during the May 3rd tornado and lost the father and two children were ripped out from under it leaving only the mother behind. This was when it was at F2 strength.
I would suggest doing a little reading on the subject before going into that area during the peak of storm season. And if you are in Oklahoma at any point tune into Channel 9 when storms are present. Gary England is the chief meteorologist there and is a pioneer in tornado technology and weather radar. he may be getting old as hell but the man knows everything there is to know about tracking and surviving a severe storm.
Just my advice.

That sounds like great advice, Ty. If I would have listened to Koneg, I would have just pulled over and eaten a sandwich, thinking I could shuffle out of the way without missing a bite. I imagine it is a bad idea to tie a rope around your neck to an anchored down park picnic table, too.

Good advice, I had never heard about the thning with overpasses. Maybe the only nice thing about living in Cincinnati is that we almost never get tornados even when places one county north, west, or south are getting pummeled. I don't know if it has to do with the river valley geography or what.

you shouldnt have any problem driving through the midwest.
tornadoes usually dont drop from the sky out of nowhere. if the weather is bad then get off your bike and seek shelter. if it starts gettign really bad, then maybe youll want to find a basement to hang out in till it passes.
a tornado will never sneak up on you, ninja like, and whisk you off to oz.

People watch movies like Twister and think you can drive a truck up to one and then get out of the way, or outrun one in a cornfield on foot that is a hundred yards away. Honestly? I mean the outlying winds within a mile alone of an F4 are around 120 mph and full of roofing nails, wood, sand, fending, etc... that will flay you to the bone or cut you in half.

Just don't be fearful when going through the area. If the sky looks bad you will know it. A big ugly green low hanging bank of clouds is a bad sign. usually hail but also tornadoes.
SOme images of clouds you want to be on the watch for.
Otherwise, enjoy! Springtime in Oklahoma/Texas etc... is gorgeous. And the temperature that time of year is in the mid 70's to mid 80's usually. Not to mention it brings out the best clothing choices from women.
