It's not like poor people are buying fruits and vegetables with them.
Food stamps should be handled by the department of get a fkin' job.

Because Democrats like fatties? Food stamps result in a weight gain of like 10lb/year.
In actuality, because the USDA was in charge of determining which food was surplus. In the original program, you purchased coupons good only for surplus food. That changed, but buying your stamps continued.
I remember Mom sometimes getting less food stamps because she couldn't afford to buy them all. Not that we ever went hungry, but the variety sure dropped off a lot some months. Sometimes we ate not much more than rice, beans and oatmeal. Oh and fresh bread made from USDA bulgar, and spread with USDA cheese or USDA peanut butter.
