I think the ' conservative' stance is not bad. The current republucan party however is not the traditional cnservative.

Ron Paul is but I state that to emphasize your point

No wonder conservatives are so hostile towards intellectualism and science.

And yet the very first line of the article you cite...

Quote:

Americans like science. Overwhelming majorities say that science has had a positive effect on society and that science has made life easier for most people.

AzureTyger posted:

Not only does truth have a liberal bias, but people who dedicate their lives to seeking the truth overwhelmingly reject the GOP.

Really? Let's take it to your cite again shall we?

Quote:

More than half of the scientists surveyed (55%) say they are Democrats

So 55% is an overwhelming rejection of the GOP?

Sounds more like the rest of the scientists actually are scientists - and rather than embracing a position without consideration (like a good little liberal) they choose to self-identify as "independent" instead.

I would interpret that poll not as a condemnation of the GOP, but a rather telling example of who the actual scientists are. Here's a hint: The real scientists are not self-identifying themselves with the DNC... or any political party.

Bad statistical analysis with you misinterpreting the 55% statistic.

And your definition of scientist 'cant identify with a political party' is pretty dumz too since it has nothing to do with actual science and everything to do with partisan stupidity. You are the poster child for the OP. When talking about 'science', the only thing you are really interested in is defending the party.

I don't think the data indicates that scientists support the democratic party, I think that is the point - an interest in truth over partisanship. I am certain the democrats align somewhat more with their liberal values which is why vastly larger numbers self identify as Democrat. The point is that they reject the Republican Party, which most likely has to do with the fact that the GOP and conservatives in general have not only aligned themselves as enemies of intellectualism and science, but they have also proved to be very rigid in doing the exact opposite of what science does. In other words, more knowledge makes them less rational.

How you could read what I wrote and still somehow come up with this interpretation suggests only one logical conclusion: You're the product of a public school education and have never tried to correct that deficiency since graduating.

Many, if not most scientists live on the public dole or are educators. Many of them live their lives insulated from reality, in the Brigadoon of academia thinking that everything should work in the real world like it works on a college campus where the daily goings on are governed by as much or more bureaucracy as the "real world" and where the hierarchy of the ruling class (administrators and board over professors over peasants (students)) is quite literally feudal. No surprise that they would identify as liberals and democrats.

Strange I've always had the impression that the US college and university system was very relaxed when it comes to hierarchy.

Colleges and universities are if anything the best institutions humanity has, nowhere else can people raise their meager knowledge and exchange ideas, even more so if you have a lot of foreign students.. People from different creeds and cultures exchanging ideas. More or less why we've evolved so much the last 100 years.
