So 55% is an overwhelming rejection of the GOP?
Sounds more like the rest of the scientists actually are scientists - and rather than embracing a position without consideration (like a good little liberal) they choose to self-identify as "independent" instead.
I would interpret that poll not as a condemnation of the GOP, but a rather telling example of who the actual scientists are. Here's a hint: The real scientists are not self-identifying themselves with the DNC... or any political party.
